I don't think anyone has thrown this idea out yet. Could be wrong.

Buf
Marner 10.89
Holl 2

Tor
Ristolainen 5.4
Reinhart 5.2
Peterka
2021 2nd

Sabres give Eichel another big piece to help keep him happy that is on more than a 1 year deal. They pick up Holl at a lower price than Risto to fill a bit of the gap on D. Marner feeding Eichel for years to come would be fun to watch.

Leafs get a 50pt guy in Reinhart who can play C or RW. He fills the spot of Marner for 1/2 the price, but of course likely less production. Leafs take on Risto at a higher price while moving Holl. I think Risto would be a good fit with Muzzin actually. Peterka is an 18 year old sniper who should be ready in a couple years when the Leafs could use another low cost ELC scorer. They also get a 2nd this year and over $2M in cap space. If they expose Risto at the draft if they are not happy with him, they will open up another $5.4M in cap space.

I wouldn't be happy about this one. I would rather actually just save the money than take on Risto especially.

@LL. I knew many would not like Risto.
Personally, I believe he is underrated by many. He plays a physical game, logs 23 Mins+ a night, doesn't turn the puck over much, has a good point shot, can play PP and Pk. He just turned 26, so entering his prime. He has mostly played on poor teams in Buffalo. I would like to see how he looks on a team that is not always playing in their own end trying to defend.
It is a gamble for sure, but I think he is better than given credit for and if he works out and Reinhart can have 50-60 pt seasons, we get a top 4 and a top 6 for the same money as Marner. Add Peterka to the mix and whatever we do with the 2nd rounder as a bonus.

I get why people wouldn't like this one, but any trade has risks and if Marner was at $8M per, we could get a ransom, but at almost $11M per, we are not and will have to likely take some risk if moving him. imo.

I’d stay clear of risto there’s a reason why Buffalo keep trying to move him he’s not that good if we are trading marner to a team in the division there’s got to be a top prospect like cozen or a package of picks coming back with reinhart due to the fact that marner has term and reinhart only signed this year.

Reinhart is RFA at end of this year. Term on his contract is not really an issue. We control the next contract, which is a plus (unless Dubas goes nuts again and hands out a pile of cash) .

Risto, if moved, is for help up front as the team has a lot of RD now. Most rumours have him available at the right price, which is high and inquiring teams haven't met the asking price. They also have Dahlen, Jukiharju and McCabe all need to be re-signed at end of season.
In a lot of areas, Risto is in the top 5 on his team stats wise.

He has flaws for sure. One is asking him to be a number 1D when he is a 3/ 4. With the Leafs he would be a #4 playing 19-20 mins a night instead. More where he belongs and should excel in the right circumstance.

You guys could be right on Risto. He may be as bad as some think. We will never know until he is played in a position to succeed.

Risto was a hot item 1-2 years ago and since then has really lost value league wide. Also, risotto only has 2 years left before ufa. Reinhardt even though he is still an RFA next summer the following summer he is ufa so he may only sign a 1 year deal again then u lose both players after 2 years. He could sign long term for sure but the more ufa years are used the higher AAV will happen so getting him is a huge risk.

Marner has 4 years remaining after this season so that’s a huge negative. Holl has same term of both Buffalo guys. Yes leafs save 2 million in cap but replacing marners skill and term will be hard

To meristeo will benefit playing with muzzin and might actually become great again but again huge risk

I think if Buffalo adds a better prospect plus a unprotected 1st in 2021 the loss of marners term gets negated

Overall not a bad trade.

If Risto was taken out and prospects added as Craiggers suggested Is would call it a fair trade.

Before the Barrie trade I was dead set against him coming here. I believe Risto will be a bigger version of Barrie. He's all offense. He may do ok beside Muzzin but I don't see how he's a significant upgrade on Holl in that case.

I don't see this trade benefiting the Leafs.

Now Ristolainen was a guy I was big on a few years ago. I really was. I even went so far as to call him the next elite player for his position. All the signs were there. He just couldn’t pull it together. Even after everyone else turned against him, I still posted props for him on this site and got laughed at for it. My Ristolainen props were some of the ones I got raked for mercilessly.

I figured Leafs would be able to work on his defensive deficiencies and any areas of his physical development that were lacking. Eventually, even I turned against him. His defensive deficiencies are too big. He may as well just switch to wing, because he can’t do his job in the back end properly.

I’m not sure what his issue is, why he didn’t develop as expected, but I assume that playing in Buffalo had something to do with it.
