Detroit in full rebuild are looking for Draft Picks for the future mostly and or prospects, this trade proposal is more about Draft Picks with Kerfoot replacing Mantha on there NHL roster to fill out there roster for the now, the retaining of Bernier is just the rest of this season at 1.5m.

For the Leafs they are looking for a forward that can move up and down the forward lines and like Hyman who can play RW or LW Mantha does the same plus can score, skate and a big body to go into the corners, Bernier is a healthy goaltender that is a safer bet going into the playoffs with FAndersen a big ???
Plus for Cap reasons Toronto needs to make this switch.

I really like the pieces here. Bernier has proven reliable for a terrible Wings team and Mantha is wasting his prime years there.

The only problem I see is that the Leafs will be on the hook for 3 more years with a 5.5M AAV. The only way it could work is to somehow talk Yzerman into retaining a large chunk for that duration.

With Hyman and another goaltender to re-sign/ sign this off-season and Reilly next, I would like to see them save space for that.
