I truly believe Armstrong will trade the farm to get Matthews and overpay him long term to be a Coyote for the rest of his career.
Arizona is in a different position than Toronto that Matthews would save the team staying in Arizona, just like players like Mario Lemieux did saving Pittsburgh from moving to another city, if Arizona doesn't pull this move I see Matthews signing somewhere else.

The Leafs are at a point that making a trade like this will keep them a Top Team for years to come, adding 2 NHL Forwards in Crouse and Schmaltz, 2 Top Prospects in Cooley and Guenther plus probably a Top 15 1st Rounder in a deep draft, and adding a 3rd Rounder they traded getting LSchenn back only is a positive move going forward, some people might not like this type of trade if you are a Leaf fan, but it would be a very smart trade to make from The Leafs side of it.

My understanding is we can't negotiate until July 1 which is the same time his NMC kicks in. We either trade him at the end of the season assuming he won't resign or wait and potentially get screwed. Also, what team will want him knowing he may not resign?

I may be wrong, but I think it is that he cannot sign an extension until July 1st. A deal could be in place ahead of time, but can't be officially signed until then.

I’m sure Leafs are already talking with Matthews’ agent about his impending extension.
They just can’t sign him until July 1st.
If they can’t get some positive feedback from Matthews camp prior to the NTC kicking in then a trade at the draft may be wise.
Risking Matthews walking in 2024 should be enough to end any NHL, GM’s career!
If Matthews can’t give the Leafs an answer before the draft then obviously he is not 100% sold on staying in Toronto.

The whole Arizona thing is so over blown will Matthews play there yes but I think unles they get a lot better and into a new arena a lot sooner I don’t see the draw for Matthews that being said I can see him do a end of his career move home and retire their but he’s not playing in his prime for a basement team that is a poverty organization in the nhl playing infront of 5 thousand people.
