Good Morning,
I thought I’d break down my thought process on what should happen going forward and how many people are trying out for few positions.
First off I’d trade off these 4 even for draft picks: Liljegren, Jarnkrok, Robertson, Timmins. This frees up around 7M.
My preferred lines with who is signed after these trades:
Knies Matthews Domi
? JT Nylander
McMann Kampf Marner - shut down line
Dewar Holmberg Reaves
Spare F -?
Here are the Forwards that are battling for that #2 LW position and spare F: Cowan, Patches, Grebyenkin, Minten, Steeves, Lorentz.
I would take Cowan since they want to keep Patches as well. Last year Knies died out a bit from not being use to playing so many games. Keep Cowan and Patches giving a 60%-40% split to keep both players fresh throughout the year.
Lines would look like this depending on who is playing:
Knies Matthews Domi
Cowan/ Patches JT Nylander
McMann Kampf Marner
Dewar Holmberg Reaves
Spare: Cowan or Patches
* One added point to the forward group is that I am not sure why everyone is trying to get rid of Kampf. He along with Marner are our two best PK’ing F’s. I really believe Keefe mis used him in the 4th line but I think his true potential would show as a 3C shut down guy.
Defence:
Rielly Tanev
OEL McCabe
Benoit Hakanpaa
Spare LD and RD?
D trying out for LD spare: Weber, Mermis, Rifai, Chadwick.
Trying out for RD spare: Myers, Mattinen
My picks: Weber and Mattinen
We would have enough cap space after those trades to keep a spare F and two spare D with lots of cap space left over for a deadline deal if needed.
My Final Roster after Training Camp:
Knies Matthews Domi
Cowan/ Patches JT Nylander
McMann Kampf Marner
Dewar Holmberg Reaves
Spare F: Cowan or Patches
Rielly Tanev
OEL McCabe
Benoit Hakanpaa
Weber Mattinen
Woll / Stolarz

I stopped reading when I saw marner on the third line…as a checking winger….
???.

I personally would have Nylander play with Mathews, Marner with Tavares and Domi on the shut down line. Marner kills penalties, but I don't see him as a shutdown guy.

Willy on the third line. Been wanting it for years.
Can't happen at his salary now though. Would make Tre look dumb.

Maybe it’s cause you can’t read Stumpy or you’re too busy trying to get 2 - 2nd rounders for Liljegren. ?. Maybe you shouldn’t use sarcasm when you don’t know much about hockey or the Leafs.
@Leafsstink I think Berube will spread the lines out this year as he should. Keefe was complaining about depth scoring last year until he finally moved Nylander or JT to the 3rd line. Plus Marner with McMann will get his chances.

Marner seems to bring the best out of JT, whenever they played together. I totally agree with spreading out the lines/ scoring. I just can't put shut down and Marner in the same sentence.

I get where you’re coming from but if either Nylander, Marner or Domi have to go on that line to play against the other teams best line, it’s Mitch for me. Nylander and Domi aren’t very good in their own end plus Marner running his own line could bring out his potential. I also wouldn’t mind Domi with Mitch where Domi takes faceoffs and Marner takes care of down low coverage.

Ya Marner on the third line is ridiculous maybe in the playoffs cause it think his skill set doesn’t stack up to playoff hockey and that’s been the Achilles heel for him in my opinion he can’t do what he normally does when the whistles go away and he’s the small guy on the ice in terms of playoff hockey 3rd line offers him a bit more of an advantage as far as talent on paper but to have that as your regular lineup is way off base.

Get a grip
In what universe does a 10.9 million dollar player with offensive skills end up on the third line?
That’s right… No universe
So yes …???????????.

Ha ha ha!
Sticking Marner on the 3rd line with McMann and Kampf, a 4th line center, should just about be enough to guarantee that he doesn’t resign with the Leafs next summer!

Hey stupid, *stumpy, guaranteed that either Nylander or Marner end up on the 3rd line this year. Pay attention because Willy, JT and Marner all took turns playing the 3rd line last year.
@WB not our problem anymore. He isn’t gonna be here long term anyway, put him where the team needs him. It will also drive his production down a bit which won’t help his next contract (just incase they decide to resign him. )

@WB good. Go get paid 12+ somewhere else. If Mitch doesn't resign and JT takes a discount in the 4-6 range, that's a tonne of cap space.
