Trading Gardiner defeats the purpose. he is a good, young top4 defender - we need those, and shouldn't be trading them away. i'd simply do JVR for Theodore. add picks where needed (on #1s)

Here is what I see coming
Marleau-Nylander -Marner
Hyman-Matthews-Brown
Leivo-Kadri-Kapanen
Martin-Moore-Komarov
Reilly- (Future #1)
Gardiner-Zaitzev
Hainsey-Carrick
Move Nylander to center now and Komorov can play both sides TRADE JVR/ BOZAK + pick or prospect for legitimate # 1 D Hainsey can play R D. That leaves Sosh-the Goat-Reichel when needed. Now that is a championship team with the correct trade for # 1 D. Marner is a pure passer, and although old Marleau is still a pure goal scorer add Nylander to that mix wow Marner gets 2 people to pass to that can do something with it. This also opens space for Matthews line to get second string competition. Which line do you defend really. Give them equal minutes. then you make Marleau Interim (C) with Matthews and Reilly as (A) until Matthews is ready. I see this team winning the cup. I really see Marner and Marleau Playing together and a lot of people didn't see what Hyman did due to low point total but I think he was a beast that took a lot of coverage from opposition. let's not forget what Leivo can do. There is a reason they didn't let him go. He will play this year.

Nylander must be signed before he becomes more costly as a center.
Marleau-Nylander-Marner
Hyman-Matthews- Kapanen
Komorov-Kadri-Brown
Leivo/ Martin-Moore-Soshkinov/ Bracco

Reilly-Ellis
Gardiner- Zaitzev
Hainsey- Carrick
Dermott

JVR+ Bozak traded to Nashville for Ryan Ellis + and Komorov extended.

Matthews scored 40 last year . You don't put him on the second line.

Lines aren't numbered anymore. the NHL is a match up game, if you want to number lines than Toro tos top line would be Komarov-Kadri-Brown because they play against the opponents top line every night.
Matthews was second line all season being sheltered from top lines and top faceoff men all season, and top D when Babs had his choice.
Numbering lines is a thing of the past, you have 3 capable line and in today's NHL and 1 energy line, usually with a skilled player to create something. so I couldn't disagree more with your statement tyguy85.
