Then if you take a look at next year you have picks to fill up the prospect cupboard plus our defence don't look so shabby. we have the expansion draft to work around next.
So muzzin and Barrie walks boo who?
That leaves Riley, Dermot and Manson or Jensen which ever plays better gets protected in the expansion draft or both plays lights out they protect both, they have term, numbers are close, both are RD but there's a 2 million cap hit differential for Manson over Jensen.
Now the forwards being protected probably goes like this Mathew, Tavares, Nylander, Wilson, Johnsson, Kerfoot so this scenario allows us to protect both Jensen and Manson if they are playing lights out if not then the one with the biggest cap hit goes!

So that leaves who for protecting? Dermot hopefully Fills in for Muzzin plus we have Sandin and perhaps Hollowell to fill in the other holes this would be ideal for Toronto it opens up money, picks and some tradable pieces going into the draft and then the expansion draft. Also if the they don't have to protect Jensen or Manson they have that to help shape the defence.
Horton and Clarkson are off the books
So without banging off all the numbers but I'm pretty sure we are under cap with the moves made, we sign Pieteranglo and Schenn then our team heading into the 2020-2021 Season looks vicious!

In 2019/ 20 you are within a 300 K of the cap.

8 Forwards Protected
Johnssson Tavares Kapanen, Matthews, Nylander, Kerfoot, Wilson and either Vrana or Hyman.

Leafs protect Reilly, Manson, Dermott, Leafs lose either Jensen, Vrana or Hyman. That leaves them with 3 MM before Salary Cap increase for 2020/ 21. That cap increase could be another another $3 MM. This would allow for either Barrie being extended for an additional $4.25 MM (7 years x 7 MM) and offering Muzzin 4 x 5.5 MM.

Thus allowing Leafs defense for a long period of time period
Reilly Manson, Muzzin and Barrie, with Sandin and Liljergren.

The only way the Leafs could keep Dermott, if Jensen was drafted by Seattle. Hyman is traded for a draft pick or prospect and Dermott takes a $1.5 to 1.8 MM raise. This would allow the TML to be under $84.5 MM for next years cap.

I doubt Washington wants Marner and a bag of pucks for 3 solid roster players. If they do it's a great deal and I say take it.

Manson is a non starter. Ceci and Lindgren are not worth Manson. Ceci is a cap dump and nothing else unless he plays a couple months and does well. Maybe then some value is attached to him and Lindgren is basically a throw in in most deals.

I love the idea of signing Petro. Have said many times I can see Dubas setting up for a big move like that. Once muzzin, Barrie and Ceci all come off the books he has the cap room if Lili and Sandin can play at the NHL level since they don't need to be protected if I remember correctly. I am not sure if the money to stay under the cap is there though since Reilly needs to be resigned soon as does Freddy. In signing both Schenn and Petro your basically just saying "sorry guys but no more for either of you". Tough call to make there.

Last point is, why do Clarkson and Horton matter if they come off the books or not? LTIR opens that space up anyway so who cares? The only thing waiting to come off right now is Kessel retained salary.

@leafGM I was on the liberal weedies this morning when I posted that ha ha! I’m out camping with phone service the ol’lady hates it lol! So I blazed through that one with a cup of tea I just checked in, I reread the post and had a good laugh.
That said the Clarkson and Horton contracts are useless but under good cap management and understanding how it works seems to allow for above the cap maneuvers while still keeping the team together. Toronto can afford to take on these types of contracts while collecting prospects from teams looking to dump those contracts. It’s Toronto’s way of looking for a diamond in the rough through financial means! I’m not saying it’s good practice and it can become a juggling act but it’s nice to see ways around the cap Once again liberal weedies got me!
The rest of the trade is some what garbage but I was on to something there lol!
For the record expansion draft rules your allowed 1 goalie and 8 skaters!
I called it before and I will do it again @hotwing69 Pieteranglo will be signing and playing in Toronto next year ha ha! The schenn signing was the liberal weedies again we can’t afford him lol! we do need to sign Riley and RILEY FOR CAPTAIN! I’m not sold on Muzzin or Barrie they’re saying muzzin @ 6mil and Barrie wants 7+ but that’s another topic for another day. I wonder what’s for supper?

Reilly only has a few years left so he does need to be signed soon. Also, expansion draft rules are 7 forwards, 3 D and a goalie OR 8 skaters and a goalie. So the leafs would obviously take the former option. I can't imagine any team besides maybe Ottawa and Detroit wanting to protect 8 instead of 10 lol but even they probably want 10.

From my understanding, you can only put two layers on LTIR at the same time. Prevents teams from hoovering up all the damaged goods put there to circumvent the cap. Kinda like what you’re suggesting. Lol.

Could still take on players if done well though @leafsgm. Guess the issue would be if you already have Clarkson and Horton (example) and Mathews went down for 2 years you just have to eat the 11m cap hit.

I think you can switch it up. So you have the highest paid players on LTIR all the time. I can’t see why they wouldn’t be allowed to do that.

A team can have as many players as it wants on LTIR. Anaheim had at least 4 last year and Toronto currently has 4 with Dermott and Hyman set to start the season on it.

I believe you can out who ever you want because it opens roster spots. The issue is it does not open cap space beyond 2 players.
