Leafs trade Nylander
Carolina trades Slavin
Pretty straightforward. Slavin is huge improvement st 2LHD, and is signed long term to a decent contract. Muzzin moves to RHD, or plays 3LHD until Dermott gets back.

I love slavin and i love this deal and the thinkng behind it.
Only problem is carolina is 2 million over cap at moment and with no cap releif by way of ltir contracts they need to deal a bigger cap contract for a smaller cap contract so unless they add say a brock mcginn valued contract to this deal i just can't see it happening. Other solution would be replace nylander with kapanen and a a pick or prospect.
Carolina is a good target because of the problem they created. they must either shed 2 million through a deal or release a 5 million dollar player ar 2/ 3rds salary for nothing to make it work. hows the marleau contract looking now carolina. lol.

I like slaving but I don't think a LD is the answer. As of next year Reilly and Dermott will be top 4 why add another LD?

I would trade Kapanen + Liljergren for Slavin, resolves the financial problem
Marner signs a 3 year contract at $9 MM, and leafs are still under the cap.

Slavin is the best defenseman on a team loaded with high quality defensemen. He’s also on a fantastic contract. Along with Rielly and Dermott, we have our three defensemen.
Of course, I’m eager to see how Muzzin and Barrie play together. Could it be that Muzzin wins Norris ahead of Rielly (Muzzin was 11th in voting last year) . That was splitting the season between two organizations, and playing most of his time on the Leafs with Zaitsev as his partner. This year should see him improve even further on an already impressive showing.
If Leafs could a Slavin, or another top defenseman of that nature, they would have four top 50 defensemen on the team, with Dermott and Ceci on the last pairing. Probably the second best in the league next to SJ.

Let's be honest muzzin is good but he isn't Norris like previous post state. I don't think Carolina is willing to trade tiger best Dman. Tor needs a good defense first puck moving Dman to play with Reilly. Nylander does not get you top pairing dmen.

Muzzin has come in 11th for Norris voting three years in a row. So actually, yeah, he is a perennial Norris candidate. Maybe you should do some more research before posting. You might gain more respect for some of our players then.

11th is very far from winning. So he got a few votes. Lol every player on the leafs is so over hyped it's in hilarious. Some of you even pumped up schmaltz as a first pair Dman.
You guys are in some serious trouble being 3.5 over the cap and marner wants 11 12 mil to sign. 1 week from training camp. Good luck with that.

Why are we in trouble redwing1?
None of us need to worry about the leafs cap problems.
Just in case you need some clarity on the cap situation
Yes, the leafs are 3.5 million over. However, during the offseason and up to the first game of the regular season teams can be 10% over. In case your math skills aren't there that's 8.15 million. That means leafs still have 4.65 million to play with.
Their cap situation also has 2 ltir players who take up around 9 million or so. Once the season is ready to go they get put on ltir and the leafs now have roughly 5.5 million in cap space.
The leafs then, since the marlies play down the road, only carry the minimum 20 roster players thus enabling them the cut 5 2 way deals from their cap. that's roughly 3.5 million leaving 9 million in cap space.
Marner waits until ltir players are used and gets a 3yr 9 million deal. The numbers people get for marner are media driven. Both dubas and marner knew going in he couldn't sign until the last possible second.
Why agree or disagree with the media. Marner not signing right this moment doesn't hurt the leafs. It only makes other teams with rfas waiting on marner squeemish.
Just remember if thomas and kyrou are as good as what redwing1 thinks they will become then guess what? In 2 years st. louis will be in cap hell also.
By the way 6X 31 = 186 . If anyone gets 11th in a field of 186 they are considered pretty damn good. If they keep that spot 3 years in a row its even more remarkable.
Yes Muzzin may not win the Norris but he is consistantly better than everyone but 10 people every year. that's pretty damn good to me. thanks for that info LeafsGM. i looked up norris voting and i was impressed with those results.
People put schmaltz on first pairing not because he deserves it. Noone said he was a star. People just put him there so the D would be even throughout the lineup. Is Boumeester better than Dunn? If the answer is no well even redwing1 put him higher in the lineup pairing with parayko. heck isn't edmondson playing with petroangelo in the lineup? Just sayin. they are just lines anyways who cares where people think they should play in a lineup?
