Leafs trade 4th round pick

Arizona trades Eric Comrie

Hutch looked real shaky last night. I get that the Leafs were playing 3 in 4 and they just gassed for a few minutes in the third. But Hutch did look shaky, and he let Jeff Petry score a penalty shot. The Leafs also don't have a clear backup plan in case Freddy goes down, and Comrie has two years of term, which is nice for next year.

I don't buy the Leafs lacking grit. They were laying hits too last night, and they don't seem to get deterred by physicality. Marner actually threw a few hits of his own after taking that big one. Hyman's return will help up the physicality (for those who think it's lacking) and will shift Kapanen back to RW. I think with him, we're seeing that his lack of high-end skill and mediocre hockey IQ is limiting his impact on the left wing.

Mikheyev should be too line LW. I don't get the reasoning for kappy up there. Same as Spezza should be playing.

I don't mind the trade makes sense in most ways. If Freddy goes down though the leafs are in a world of trouble. They ride him so hard all year because their entire playstyle is predicated on having a great goaltender. No matter the backup J don't see that changing.

Good trade. I like Hutch though unfortunately his not an adequate back up for a contending team.

I'm sure Babcock is debating moving one of Mickey and Mooresy up and shifting Kappy down to his 3rd line RW spot, but I imagine he's also hesitant to split up that 3rd line as it's been extremely effective. I'm not sure what I would do, maybe try them both out up there just to see if either can provide a spark with JT and Marner. It'll be Hyman's job in a few weeks anyway, and Moore will unfortunately be relegated to the 4th line.

On that note, agreed about the Spezza comment. He's clearly separated himself from the other forwards in that 4th line rotation and deserves to stay in. But for all we know, Babs is just trying to ease him in amd keep him fresh for later in the year while the team still has pressbox forwards Babs can sub in.

Lol Marsbar man you really have a lot of faith in Babs don't ya. I had more faith in him a few years ago than I do now. In fact I don't think he would be bench boss right now if Dubas had his way or if he wasn't paid a boatload of cash. 2 new assistants, a bunch of new players, same old ok and PP. Not going to jump the gun and get all riled up 3 games in but he seems pretty stubborn about things. Especially his hate for Spezza.

Is Comrie better than Hutchison?

if you think he is then not a bad trade although why not deal Hutch and 6th for him then?

@LeafsLife I do have a ton of faith in Babsy, and I could honestly write a 10,000 word essay on why lol but yeah, I trust the process

@Craigger I'm not advocating replacing Hutch, more so augmenting the goalie room and bringing in competition for Hutch. Competition breeds success - just look at Garrett Sparks. All of his greatest success on the Marlies came with Calvin Pickard nipping at his heels. I think bringing in Comrie just creates a stronger backup position regardless of who wins the #2 job.

I think Leafs should be looking for BU with the potential to be a starter one day. There’s quite a few teams running tandems 1a/ 1b we could look at, as well, there are a few teams with more than one A-prospect for us to look at.

The most important position on the team, there are a lot of very good goalies out there just waiting to be discovered. The “Diamonds in the Rough” as Dubas calls them. St. Louis found theirs last year. Is it possible Leafs have one and don’t know it yet? They just need their chance?

Right now Andersen is the starter obviously. I’m not confident he can carry the heavy workload of the regular season he has been the last couple years and still bring us deep into playoffs unless he has a reliable le backup to carry the extra 10-12 games a year.

I wonder? Binnington didn’t start playing full time u TIL well into the regular season. Think St. Louis would have won the cup if he played a full year.

Still don't know why braden halverson didn't get a longer look.

It took mcihinney what 12 years to finally become a backup.
Backups are so hard to judge but finding that diamond usually happens around age 24

Binningtons numbers have always been good. Good numbers seasons wise just injuries i think. however, if he would of been called up in october 2018 while yeo was coach he would be on the waiver wire at least once by now. Thank god for him his team got a new coach and system. he still has shanky games.1 game per series he looked so bad. Even in owen sound he was either hero or zero. nothing inbetween with him. thank got his good lasts 5 games before a dud.

Yeah, I've followed the guy since he was 16.i kinda know his pattern. solid guy and goalie. just needs to work on his dud games a bit.

Once he gets scored on, he keeps getting scored on is what you’re telling me Craigger?

He might still easily be the next Jim Carey.
