Plan and Simple. Toronto is not rough enough

Edmonton trades Nurse and Kassian

Toronto trades Johnsson and Marincin
Columbus trades Anderson

Anderson Matthews Nylander

Kassian Kerfoot Mikheyev
Petan Spezza Goat

These deals do make leafs tougher but quite a bit slower also.

Leafs get fleeced in the Edmonton deal. I’m starting to think the unwritten rule when floating Edmonton trades is that Kassian needs to be involved.

Nurse is no upgrade over Muzzin, so I don’t really see the need to make that deal unless you cover Nurse’s RFA status over Muzzin’s UFA Even after making this deal we still have to many LHD and will be forced to move someone onto their offside.

Unless you value Nurse significantly higher than Dermott, then Leafs are overpaying significantly Kapanen for Kassian. Maybe Kassian won’t take a dumb throwing the stick penalty, but he will take a lot of other dumb penalties instead.

I would take that deal if you didn't include Kassian or Dermott. I believe Nurse is a good player. He, in a one for one, would require Kapanen. I am totally down. If Kassian is included I would hang up the phone. Stop trying to bring an over paid knuckle dragger on a bad contract. Kassian is an idiot that deserves league minimum in order to add value. If he wants to win a cup being paid minimum bring em on. Otherwise he can stay with the worst run organization in hockey.

@LeafsGm would you do Nurse for Kappy? Seems like a win win exchange of RFA to me. Would like to know what you Craigger and Marsbar think.

Edm says no.

Nurse for Kappy

Id be neither happy nor upset if this deal happened.

Mikheyev would slot into kapanens spot. Bracco, korchkov or shore would slot into mikheyevs old spot

Nurse would slot beside reilly and ceci moves into holl or marincins spot.

Id even try to give edmonton back marincin if theyd take him.

On the flip side i like kapanen and think by game 20 he will be singing a differant tune.

Imagine if he gets to edmonton, plays on mcdavids right side and takes off literally and figeratively. Wed all be what the h e double hockey sticks.

So yeah either or.

Actually, getting nurse for kappy would also solve that whole expansion draft delemna people keep writing about.

So yeah i'd do the deal even though i know the second kappy leaves toronto he nets 30 goals. Once a leaf leaves he either gets a cup or blossoms into an amazing player. but ill take the risk.

redwing1 way to contribute. you're like the person who doesn't show the math work when solving an equation. "Edm says no". classic answer.

As far as I know, Edmonton is still hurting for wingers. Especially RW. They spent all last season looking for someone to line up beside McDavid and came up empty handed.

Nurse for Kapanen straight up is a deal I’m pretty sure Edmonton would jump at. Nurse maxes out at 2LHD. He’s not a true top line defender and his skill set is more suited for a second line guy akin to Muzzin.

Not sure Leafs would do Kapanen for Nurse straight up for basically the reasons listed above. We could move either Nurse or Dermott to their off side, but then what do we do with $4.5M Ceci? This trade makes us weaker up front because we don’t bring in replacement for Kapanen, and stuffs our defense with yet another LHD, who although I like him, we really don’t need him.

So, while I think Edmonton would do Nurse for Kappy straight up, I’m hesitant to think Leafs would make the same deal.

Ceci won't be here next year and Nurse just takes Muzzin spot after this year. I like Muzzin a lot but he will start to regress soon at his age. Nurse for Kappy solves a lot of issues and means you protect Dermott Nurse Reilly

No doubt Kappy excels on EDM especially beside Mcdavid.

Not so sure Muzzin regresses as rapidly as you might think Leafife. Defensemen have a longer shelf life than forwards. They tend to develop slower, reach peak later, and decline later than forwards do. Most good nhl defensemen usually retire around 37-40. With the more elite ones hanging on into their 40’s. Muzzin is 29 this year I believe, which means that as a defenseman, he is still in his prime.

We can easily extend him for a few more years and not have to worry about major decline in performance. It doesn’t have to be a long extension. A 5 year deal like the ones we seem to like ha sing out to the rest of the core guys seems about right. That would take us right through his prime years and into the age where we can really expect to see him decline.

Anything after about 35 for a defender and you will likely see him regress significantly ala Duncan Keith/ Seabrooks style. Of course, since we only have a 5 year window of opportunity ity, then I guess it’s pwrfect sense.

I don't see how Nurse for Kapanen works right now in light of how the Leafs roster is constructed, but as a pure hockey trade, I think the Leafs would have to take it and figure out how to tweak the roster to accomodate - probably by sending Sandin down to the Marlies honestly.

Realistically, I do think Kapanen will be traded, but not until the season ends. Mikheyev will need to be resigned (and 78 games and a playoff run later, who knows what that contract will look like) and the Leafs have two solid, albeit very different, inhouse candidates that should be able to step in by next October: Korshkov and Bracco.

So yeah, summer of 2020 Kapanen gets moved for an RHD. But for now I think this roster is absolutely stacked, and the Leafs main focus should be bringing in competition for Hutchy.
