No way Barzal costs anywhere near what Matthews is getting, so we save a significant amount of money here too.

Tavares is on pace for his career average. He won't always be a 50 goal scorer. Never has been before. Nylander thought I have been couching for for a long time. He is on a steal of a contract if he keeps improving too.

Barzal will command a very nice raise but nothing near Matthews money. Remember the conversations, guys like Dreger were talking about a contract higher than McDavid, that is what messed things up.

Mathews could have had 13m and I still would have been fine with it as long as it was an 8 year term. Gives an 8 year window instead of 5. Current situation cap may actually go down or raise very slightly but that was unpredictable at the time.

Matthews is great, no doubt about it. But this trade improves the ten overall. I am assuming Barzal gets a few more goals and points playing with better linemates here. Huge difference between Nylander and Marner than anything Islanders can offer. Also, huge difference in coaching styles. Trotz plays a defense first game. Leafs do not. I guarantee if Barzal came here as our 2C he would be a 30 goal, 70 point player. Do we really need two superstar centers? If we never had Matthews and drafted Barzal instead, everyone would be stoked about having Tavares and Barzal. Just because we got Matthews are you pooh poohing Barzal. Pulock is a great defenseman. And Mayfield is much better than Marincin, who we would waive. Play Mayfield/ Liljegren at 3RHD and Rosen/ Sandin at 3LHD. Break the kids in slow.

Got a bit sidetracked and never answered this one. I think my main issue with the trade is the amount we give up. If Mathews were moved tomorrow, even at his current cap hit, he would command this type of return from someone alone. There are many teams desperate for a "Mathews" type franchise player purely from a marketing stand point.

Remember what Lindros got alone? That would be what Mathews goes for. I would trade Mathews in a heartbeat if it were offered just because you never know and I still believe (guess I'm getting old lol) that depth and defence wins cups. Best team I have seen is the Dougie Andreychuk team and guess who was a selke winner on that team? Lol.

This return minus Dermott and Kapanen I would do it. Otherwise I would hold out. Just think what A team like Ottawa would pay for Mathews. He immediately helps the rebuild but more importantly gives them a guy to market. Get fans in the seats and get people talking about them.
