Matthews to Arizona for Kessel, rights to Hall and a 1st rd pick in 2020 and 2021.

Marner and Nylander to Montreal for Domi, Kokiniemi, Petry and a 1st rd pick in 2020 and 2021.

Anderson to NYI for a 1st and 2nd rd pick in 2020 draft.

Kapanen, Liljegren, Bracco,Kerfoot to Detroit for Mantha and a 1st and 2nd rd pick in the 2020 draft.

Tavares to Minnisota for Staal and a 1st and 2nd rd pick in 2020 and 2021.

That would give the Leafs

5 - 1st rd picks in 2020.

4 - 2nd rd picks ( 1 of which their own ).

4- 1st rd picks in 2021 ( 1 being their own )

2 - 2nd rd picks in 2021

So a combined 9 - 1st round picks and
6 - 2nd rd picks in the next 2 drafts

Agree1 Disagree1

Love it. Though I would recommend bringing back a goalie in at least one of those deals. Montreal has Primeau, and NYI have Soderstrom and Sorokin. One of them would be better than trying to draft our own goalie.

The best thing about this is that you have set us back so far in the rebuild that we would probably be basement dwellers for a few more years after as well. So maybe we can pick up another 1st overall or more.

I had extremely high expectations for Kotkaniemi when he was drafted. And I still do. But last I checked he was playing in the AHL before the season got suspended. Along with the poor play of the top three picks from last year's draft (Dach, Hughes, Kakko), I have to ask: Are teams trying to bring their picks into the NHL too soon? Few top prospects have made the leap seamlessly to NHL right after draft lately. Leafs were lucky with Matthews. We could have got Hughes or Hirschier. So should these teams take more time to develop their prospects? And how does it hurt these kids development being thrown in to NHL action so soon withouth proper development?

So we are trading the entire core for picks. Boy you really hate this group. And I would imagine the boys picked in these drafts would love to come here based on the way we treat our talent.
@Leafsgm: no bashing here, just comments and conjectures.

I expected more from kakko than anyone else in the last draft. He was playing against higher competition even if not NHL worthy players.

@16

Not my proposal. And even if it was I wouldn't care if you like it or not. At least it's interesting. got to give Kennedy credit for originality.

Can anyone tell me if there was some universe where Mathews, Marner, Tavares, Reilly, Freddy and Hyman were traded for the top 2 picks in the next two drafts plus Quinn Hughes, Makar and Tkachuk you wouldn't take it? I would not trade the core right now other than Marner but that's for cap reasons. I have always thought he is overpaid and right now the NHL is probably hemorrhaging money so the cap won't go up much if at all. The rebuild is done and I would rather tweak the roster but MNM+Tavares brought a Lindros type return each of picks and prospects you can't turn it down.

So as an example imagine having 5 1st rd picks in 2017 let's say Makar @ 4th, Pettersson @ 5th, Mittelstadt @ 8th, Tippet @ 10th and Suzuki @ 13 th. Then in 2018 having 4 1st rd picks say B. Tkachuk @ 4th, Hayton @ 5th, Q. Hughes @ 7 th and Farabee @ 14 th. How long before the team is ultra competitive.

15 Mar 2020 22:27:06
This year's draft is supposed to be a real winner too. Loaded with can't miss prospects. A team like Ottawa should be able to cleanup in this draft. How long until Ottawa will be competitive now? Shouldn't be too long unless they really screw things up over there. Then again, I've said the same thing about Edmonton and Arizona for years. So we shall see.

@kennedy

What I like even better than your proposal was your response. You didn't just say guys that were all Hughes successes so far. You included a few maybes. And that is fair. You easily could have selected all guys already playing in the NHL and doing well, and I wouldn't have expected any different since you were trying to argue your point. But you did the right thing and three in a few question marks still. That's highly admirable and reflects reality a bit more. Good job.

15 Mar 2020 23:22:58
That's the hard part though Kennedy. Imagine having a big pile of crap as the top 10 picks and you have all 10. That has happened before.

16 Mar 2020 20:47:15
Leafs got lucky with Matthews. He was an instant success. Look at Hughes and Hirschier and the struggles they are having. I would rather haveatthews at $11M than Hirschier at $7M any day. That will be a contract Jersey will regret deeply.
