Tor Johnson
Phi ghost

He been on the trade block for awhile and can play right side so this has to be the best offer they have had

Tor Nylander
Min Dumba 1st 2nd

They wanted a centre right? There it is. My irrational love of Nylander aside this makes sense. Nylander can play 1-2 C for them for an extended period we compete now.

Agree0 Disagree1

I can't see Minny doing that trade straight up but to expect a 1st and 2nd makes this trade a definite no go.

Both these guys are on a major low right now. I don't know what happened to Ghost. Since his miracle year two years ago he has been on a complete downslope. The price is right though, and I would take a chance on him if all it means is giving up Johnsson. Philly is looking to compete sooner rather than later, and as such, might want the extra forward depth and secondary scoring Johnsson brings. God knows they have enough defense en, especially RHD, that they can trade one away.

Nylander for Dumba is a no in my opinion. Dumba's value is at record lows. He didn't bounce back from that brutal pec injury last year, and his game has suffered as a result. As a result, his stock has fallen significantly. I would either wait until we see how he does next year, or make a lower offer (Kapanen for Dumba straight up maybe) . That makes the risk/ reward ratio a lot more palatable. Right now it's way too much risk counting on Dumba to bounce back. Minnesota was asking for a centre, so we can give them Kerfoot and maybe a small add. I definitely wouldn't give them Nylander though. Not after his team mvp performance this year.

Thought call on the wait and see LeafsGm. Was thinking the same thing myself but the better he does the more the price goes up. That's the concerning part for me.

@IslandJet I'm assuming you say they wouldn't take Nylander because they had offers of franchise centres in great contracts they turned down.? Nope. They clearly did not get offered even close what they expected on either Brodin or Dumba. Same as Ghost. They would both be on new teams if they were even offered something resembling fair market value.

Nylander is for cap reasons. As much as it pains me I believe of all cap casualties it will be Nylander. It should be Marner (in my opinion) but Nylander is seen as the most expendable of the big 4 right now in Dubas mind (again in my opinion) .

Ceci and Barrie come off the books. Engvall, Mikheyev, Dermott and Muzzin all get raises. Unless the plan is to tread water in the off season and hope it all clicks next year something needs to be done.

I read a couple articles saying cap may go up, some say down, and some say it stays flat so I have no idea about cap room though. Best guess is it stays flat.

That whole "Nylander will not be traded on my watch" might come back to haunt Dubas. Though I did notice that he didn't make the same promise to Matthews and Marner. As far as getting what you pay for, Nylander gives more bang for the buck than almost every leaf except maybe Reilly and Hyman. If we want to save big on the cap, Marner is the guy to go. By all accounts he is the most overpaid.

26 Mar 2020 13:30:53
I agree he is the most overpaid wholeheartedly I'm just not sure if Dubas sees it the same way. At this point I'm also not sure if you get the same value for Marner you used too. If he was traded before he signed that contract I believe his value would have been far higher.

He's a damn good player. And probably already one of the top 10 in the league for his position. But compared to his peers, Marner really took home big. That leaves a bad taste in my mouth, especially considering that when you compare Nylander and Marner's stats, Nylander had almost identical stats as Marner up to that point. So one year later and Marner is worth $4M per season than Nylander? It kinda seems unfair to Nylander now does t it? Nylander is getting in line with his peers, while Marner is way ahead of all them. I think Nylander holding out really shook Dubas up and he felt he had to get Marner signed. Maybe he felt he couldn't risk Marner holding out for some reason?

If Marner had held out, he might have only played a couple months before the league got shut down. Then he would have lost a whole season basically.

Hindsight 20/ 20. Looking back on it now even telling Marner to sit the season out would have meant nothing.

All of this Marner or Nylander should go is taxing. So I am about to post some massive trades that will not happen but to me would definitely improve our D corps but weaken the offense…. I am going to trade both Nylander and Marner…. they are both similar skilled players. difference is Nylander signed the now looking team friendly contract and bounced back this year and Marner was signed to a massive deal after a good season and had a less than stellar one this year. I say they both go!
