Move Dermott to right side don’t trade him.

Meant to put Montour beside Reilly my bad.

No reason to trade Dermott for Montour. That does not improve the team.

30 Jul 2020 15:56:01
I mean is that true though? Montour had back to back 30+ point season in 17-18 and 18-19. This year he was decent defensively and over his career his overall defensive stats have been very good. I think on a better team his numbers would go up naturally and you could maybe even see him crack 40 points.

What defensive stats are good? He always looks very poor to me.

This year his +/ - was +13 on a very bad Buffalo team, while he is a +20 throughout his career. His corsi for % wasn’t the greatest this year but in previous years like in 2018-19, it was 54.6%. That would naturally improve on a better team. I just don’t see why he isn’t an upgrade over Dermott. He is probably cheaper in the long run as well.

+- isn't really an asking stat. His corsi has actually been sub 50 his entire career except for last year. he also started 53% in the O-zone last year. The problem with corsi% alone is the same with most metrics. It doesn't tell the whole story. If your corsi% is lower than your O-zone starts it implies the puck goes backwards more often than not.

Perfect example is the goat. His cousin has always been brutal but he started something like 60% of the time in the D-zone under Babs so it explained a lot.

I'm not sure if your aware of this either but he only played 20 games last year. That is a very small sample size. His Fenwick is also - his entire career. There are far more unblocked shots against/ game against his team than for while he is on the ice.

Metrics are a very hard thing to read unless you take every single one in to account. I am not pretending to be some guru of analytics by any stretch but I find a lot of people just cherry pick the stats that are common a-la James Tanner and his love of WAR and 5v5 points without anything else being taken into account.

The thing I like most about Dermott is that he is excellent at standing players up at the blue line. He manages gap control between the rushing forward and the reversing defenseman better than anyone on the team. That's why his possession numbers are so good.

It might take a couple years. But I think Dermott will turn into our best overall all-round defenseman. Better than Mizzin even. We just have to let him mature in his rolea bit more.

Look at that. Hockeyluvr is finally coming to the dark side. Dermott is our future. Probably a 1LHD that's good for 30pts a year.
