I'm a little surprised at how fast this deal went through after both teams just being eliminated. I guess Dubas was really unhappy with Kapanen's performance this year.

Unless Dubas has another trade he is urgently trying to push through, then there was no rush to trade Kapanen for a pick.

The pressure is on both these GM's now. I see this as an act of desperation from both sides. Dubas trying to recoup his losses on the Marleau trade, and Pittsburgh just desperate to try anything new before it's too late for Crosby and Malkin to win again.

We only save about $1M on the cap hit. Maybe less.
Depends on what Rodrigues re-signs for. So this trade was not about saving cap. It was about unloading Kapanen and recovering our 1st.

Don’t think it was a quick-draw type of move. I believe there’s been issues with Kapanen (in house) for a while nowand Dubas merely took an opportunity to unload him. For a centre and a mid first rounder to boot! Not bad, not great. Definitely a needed (yet small) salary release valve though.
