If the Leafs are able to sign Pietrangelo, they will need to clear space. Trading Nylander is the quickest and easiest way. They could trade both Kerfoot and Johnsson, but they would not fetch much of a return for them anyways

Draft is Oct 6th, Free Agency is Oct 9th
If STL is NOT going to sign Pietrangelo, trade Dermott + 2020 2nd (condition on Pietrangelo signing) to STL
Sign Pietrangelo to 8 year $68M ($8.5M)
this pays him more money but spread the cap out by 1 more year

then

trade Nylander

To MIN: F - W. Nylander

To TOR: 2020 1st (9th overall) + F - A. Beckman + F - M. Foligno

Cap in $2.9M
Cap out $7M

Leafs draft RW - J. Quinn 9th and RHD B - Schneider 15th

I would rather risk signing Pietrangelo in free agency then potentially giving up Dermott for nothing. I’m not sure why but there is a general vibe that Dermott is with nothing on this site. Like have you watched any leaf games? He is an amazing bottom pairing guy and is definitely ready for a larger role. He is also still young and could probably fetch a late 1st round pick. Would you just throw away a late 1st for the rights to a player? I don’t think you would.

Dubas has stated multiple times that he won’t trade Nylander unless a top 4 RHD is coming in return. Assuming he is a smart GM and would rather keep Dermott then throwing him away for a guy who may not even sign with Toronto, that trade does not fill that hole. It’s a good trade value wise don’t get me wrong, but it’s not something he would do.

Dermott has no hockey sense, is a complete spaz when he has the puck on a rush, and when a forechecker approaches he coughs up a lung and then the puck.

The Blues if they are NOT going to sign him for whatever reason, then they'll look to grab an asset of any kind vs lose him for absolutely nothing.

As for the trades, the timing of the draft and FA are essential.

i alsol don't get why we are trading dermott for Pietrangelo's rights. if we could get the Minnesota pick i would take Askarov to secure goalie position and Schneider. but doubt Dubas will trade Nylander.

The hate for dermott is real lol. I think sometimes people assume Dermott is a lot older than he is.

Part of the reason for the Dermott trade is that he is due a new contract and I have Sandin graded higher than him on an ELC. The Left side has Reilly, Muzzin and Sandin, so Dermott to me is the odd man out.
