Leafs draft Byfield

LA already has a lot of excellent prospects at centre. The appeal for a generational talent winger to play beside Kopitar, Turcotte or Vilardi must be appealing.

Rangers have plenty of cap save they can easily afford this. Leafs gain an adequate replacement centre at his peak, and a future superstar on ELC for the next three years. Zibanejad has likely topped out and won’t repeat his last year, but will still be a very good placeholder for a few years until Byfield takes over.

Rangers already have Panarin. They want a better centre for him. Kreider/ Matthews/ Panarin sounds a lot like Hyman/ Matthews/ Marner. Except better.

Even with the best projections laf won't be a 50 goal 100 point guy. I haven't read anything saying he is.

Barzal and petterson. what where their projections?
Laf will be a 35 65 kinda guy
Byfield will be a 40 40 kinda guy

Matthews is a 50 50 kinda guy
Marner is a 25 75 kinda guy

Wouldnt trade either if laf and byf were comin back.

Rangers do not have a ton of cap space. They have a lot of RFA's to sign that need raises and they only have $13M in space. Their first priority is Lundqivst. If they can move him, then they have cap space.
Matthews should be the most untouchable on the Leafs. You don't trade him for a possible future star unless we are in complete rebuild mode.

I'd do it for marner, mainly because the price difference.

The main thing is that instead of 4 years of Matthews, we get 3 of Zibanejad + Byfield, then whatever else we re-sign Byfield to. So we extend the term of our 1C and cut cost all at the same time.
