Col isn't trading maker.

I like it. Avs probably agree too. Of all players to move I wouldn't want to lose Mathews or captain Morgan but it's a good deal.

An overreach for sure, but I like your thinking. Downgrade from area of strength to address an area of need is always smart. Kadri was an almost perfect 2C. Bringing Tavares in was the first step in wrecking the team. Giving him that crazy contract was another.

I don’t think Sakic would be willing to give up so much. Makar is a world class talent. An elite player for his position. At some point in the (near) future, I expect g he will be ranked #1 in the world and a perennial Norris trophy candidate. I wish Leafs could draft a stud like that. Liljegren is probably going to be a very good player. But not next year. And he will likely never be in Norris consideration.

Lets rewind to the 2015-16 season. Fresh off getting matthews 1st overall toronto just tanked to winning that pick. Expectations were very low. Yes with a youth movement in matthews marner and nylander and a ok vet group to help them along everyone knew there would be growing pains. So toronto was still rated to be a lottery pick team

Colorado coming off a .500 season and steadly getting better experts actually predicted them to be the biggest surprise and point jump prepelling them into a playoff spot possibly challenging for a division title. Nathan mackinnon had a good rookie campaign but followed it up with 2 sub par seasons by a player called the closest thing to crosby and former #1 pick. Everyone expected him after 2 bad seasons to break out. Having signing a new contract that summer he had something to prove. Landeskog the second fiddle to mackinnon and former #2 overall pick hadnt quite broken out yet. After a descent rookie year he was hurt his sophmore year but had a very productive 3rd year thus signing his deal to reflect his numbers. After 2 mediocre years after contract signing experts expected him to break out. Varmalov coming off a career year was ready to make that next step. With a good young core and good leadership it was time.

Boy was every expert wrong. Toronto exceeded expectations and found their way into a playoff spot. marner nylander at age 20 and 21 already exceeded mackinnons rookie numbers. Matthews did exactly what everyone expected but everyone else enjoyed the youth movement so much they all had big years especially kadri and leafs made the playoffs. They put up a good fight in round 1 but lost to washington.

Colorado on the other hand went the other way. Every single player regressed. Mackinnon got 52 points in his 4th year and whispers started happening about his future in colorado. What happened?

Well toronto got the 17th pick when they should of been a lottery pick and colorado got the 4th pick when they should of been a playoff contender.

In the end Makar goes to colorado and liljegren to toronto. damn why were the bad leaf vets so good that 1 year and why did mackinnon and landeskog suck so much.

The next year 2017-18 both finally had their breakout years about 3 years too late thus especially mackinnon losing roughly 30 million over the cource of his contract poor sap.

In the end if both teams did what they were suppose to do wed all be talking about makar as a leafaling with matthews marner and nylander. oh how the hockey gods work eh.

This deal is tough to stomach when leafs were that close to having makar. Then if they don't deal kadri theyd have both with matthews. with all the assets the leafs had i'm sure theyd be able to get zadorov after his piss bad 2016-17 year since he was one of the pieces in ryan oreillys trade the previous year. How everything backfired for colorado for 1 year only. they got their act together in the 2017-18 year and for doing that under achieving year they get makar as their reward. blah.

Colt are you serious? Matthews doesn't pull makar?

17 Sep 2020 07:26:19
Lol. Mathews 100% gets Makar I'm not sure what makes you think he doesn't. The only reason Colorado may not do a one for one if it came up would be salary.

17 Sep 2020 09:27:51
But i'm sure colt thinks colorado would give this package for parayko

Parayko is god in colts mind.

17 Sep 2020 16:52:42
They have rantenan why get rid of makar.

17 Sep 2020 20:20:17
Teams would give you a lot of things for Mathews lol. How many guys are in the league that can score 50+ every year?

18 Sep 2020 04:19:43
Rantanen is a winger. Matthews is a centre. I’m pretty sure Matthews is a huge upgrade over Kadri.

The question is, why would Avs put themselves in the same position as the Leafs? Bringing in Mathews means Mckinnom has an internal comparison to make. And if MacKinnon is still the better player, he will get more than Matthews. Plus, if you bring Matthews in, you would have to break up that unbelievable top line of Avs so that Matthews could have a winger his level of play. Whether that’s Landeskog or Rantanen, it doesn’t matter. If you put him on 2C with actual 2C players, he will disappoint. Leafs don’t have s second line. They have two first lines. And the reason for that I’d because they, by somewhat of a necessity given our RW strength at the time, spilt up the elite wingers, one for each of the top two lines. If Matthews went to Colorado, they would have to play someone beside him that can help make him a better player as much as Matthews helps his linemates become better.
