Leafs to use their assets to buy cap relief.

If Dubas can't sign big UFA or make any balanced trades then another approach for him to address the gaps on D that we have are as follows:

Trade 1: TOR trades Johnsson, Sandin, Anderson, Marincin and 1st pick 2020 to LA for Doughty and Quick both 40% salary retained and 5th rd pick.

So that's 3.4 for Quick and 6.6M for Doughty with the Leafs essentially using the front loaded contracts of Freddy and Andreas offset the hard dollars for LA and Sandin and the pick to aid in the rebuild for LA as well as exploit their enormous cap space.

Trade 2: TOR trades Mikheyev, Bracco and Korshkov to NJD Subban 50% retained

Gets us 2 RHD with manageable cap hits and allows Leafs to be able to still have $$ to sign some free agents

I like your thinking. And if Doughty was actually good still, I would like the trade proposal too.

At $6.6M I think it would be extremely tempting for the Leafs if only Doughty was coming back. Adding Quick doubles the risk.
