Boyd doesn’t count against the cap because he can be buried. He’s a depth piece that will spend most of his time in the AHL.

Vessey I don’t know the terms of his signing yet, I just heard he was signed. Which is a bit of a head scratcher. Unless they don’t think Mikheyev (who is going to arbitration) will be back.

All told, as it stands right now, Leafs are still over cap. Meaning that Dubas still has to trade someone. Assuming Kerfoot is the guy, and all signs point to him being traded too, Dubas will have shipped out his entire 3rd line, all players in their 20s on reasonable deals with term, for older players in their 30’s, two of whom are on 1-and-done contracts. Not good. Borrowing from the future is not usually a smart choice.

All these signings and re-designing of the bottom six. Smells like panic.

It really depends what you get back for these guys. Kapanen I have issue with. Good trade.

Johnson was shipped for cap space in all reality so not the best.

If Kerfoot lands a decent prospect+ pick or even a second rounder I won't hold hold it against him.

I'm also not concerned about term. Everyone is signing short term deals right now. Take another crack at it next year if you can.

Johnsson is 25, Kapanen 24, Kerfoot 26. All three in their prime or about to enter it. Assuming Kerfoot is next, all three guys on team-friendly contracts, discarded for guys on the wrong side of 30.

Generally, most GMs avoid such trades, younger guys with upside for guys whose best years are behind them. We lose a whole third line for a bunch of 30 year olds, two of whom are rentals. Seems a lot like desperation moves.

I mean, he isn't trading those guys straight up for the 30+. He is atleast regaining assets, as minimal as they are. Anderson for johnsson smells of Martin for that echo goalie.

Dubas isn't panicking. That former third line of Johansson kapanen and kerfoot made 10+ million. Far too much when you have over half of the cap dedicated just to the top two lines. Dubas' real panic decision was signing Tavares, that was the root cause of the never ending salary dilemma.
