Another option I was thinking about that uses TB cap issues.

Nash
Nylander 6.96

Tor
Kunin RFA
2021 1st

Threw this one out before. Works for both teams if Leafs want return on Nylander but also want cap space for another move.imo

Then

TB
Holl 2
Mikheyev RFA
2021 1st

Tor
Kilorn 4.45
Cernak RFA

TB reduces their cap by getting Holl, who is a cheaper replacement for Cernak and now they do not have to fit Cernak into their cap, as well as Mikheyev as a cheaper replacement for Kilorn for likely less than Kilorn's cap hit. They could use the 1st if necessary to package with Johnson to move him.
Leafs get a 2nd pair RHD and a top 6 winger with tons of experiance and all-around solid game.

Hyman Matthews Marner
Kilorn Tavares Kunin
Robertson Kerfoot Simmonds
Engvall Spezza (rest battle for spots)

Rielly Brodie
Muzzin Cernak
Sandin/Lehtonen/Bogosian

Agree0 Disagree3

Your really undervaluing Nylander. He has the potential to be as good as Marner. If not at least very close.

LGM-Yes, to the right buyer we could likely get more, but probably have to take cap back.
It wasn't about getting full value for Nylander though. It is about creating a more balanced team that has a better chance to compete for the Cup. We get the equivalent of an mid and late 1st for Nylander and $7M in cap space.
We can't make the second deal without the cap space. Kunin has the potential to be a 20-30 goal scorer and plays a hard game. Kilorn is a 20+ goal scorer and plays a hard game. Cernak is a middle pair young defensive minded D that should be a great shut-down tandem with Muzzin. We also needed the cap space to re-sign Kunin and Cernak while Dermott is likely moved. We should still have some cap space left to add another UFA if needed.
VGK just let Nate Schmidt go for a 3rd rounder. He is worth a lot more than that, but they needed the space for Piet. Same kind of idea. Few real trades happen where everyone says the value was fair.

Nashville gave up an older center who gets 30-35 pts a season but good +/ - guy who has hit 20 goals just once in his fluke 13-14 season plus a 2nd and 3rd round pick for younger center who hadn’t hit 32 pts or 16 goals yet and is horrible +/ - guy and a 4th round pick. I mean kerfoot has put up better numbers than both but is considered less value. LOL. Bonino even comes with a 4.1 cap hit.

My point is nylander doubles Kunin points yearly if bonino with 2nd and 3rd minus a 4th got Nashville Kunin I’m sure leafs could really grab something special here from Nashville. Nashville has 13 million in cap space and only Kunin RFA to sign and 3 roster F to fill out roster. Kunin will get 2 I’d think so him and nylander are 5 difference. Now Nashville has 8 million for 1 4th line and 2 extra roster F spots. Safe to say this is team to deal nylander to. Considering they only have 4 top 6 guys. They get nylander then grab one of Huffman or dadonov and Nashville would look great with 3 million to spare. Yikes

I’d ask for Fabbro Kunin Novak and 1st 2021
I’m thinking Nashville jumps at this

Killorn is a good target. He isn’t usually a point getter. Point every other game guy. However much like Bryan rust pulled off career year playing in top 6 when usually a 3rd line guy. Excellent +/ - guy. Throwing in big cernak might be tougher so you got to add more

I’d purpose
Lesser of 2021 1st rd pick Nash/ tor Top 10 protected
Holl
Mikhayev
Liljegren (not Dubas pick and just got fabbro)
Korshkov (not Dubas pick and just got Novak)

This might intise Tampa a bit more. Mikhayev @1.5 saves Tampa 2.95 for 3rd liner forward
Holl @2 saves probably 1.25 on cernak.
That’s 4.3 in savings I
Lilly and Korshkov probably make Tampa as well.
Overall that’s the kind of return Tampa would be looking for

Leafs can afford the 4.3 extra due to nylander deal.
All this plus added good points RLF made make these 2 deals great.

Dadonov went to Ottawa but that doesn’t change my point on dealing nylander to Nashville.

16 Oct 2020 01:26:16
Signing Dadanov is a smart move. Ottawa needs to be surrounding their young stars with experienced vets. I’m not sure how much of a leader in the dressing room Dadanov is, but he’s a good player. Ottawa is going to be a very good team in a couple years if they don’t screw things up. Again.

It’s next offseason but I think it’s marner out the door Nylander contract has more value.

16 Oct 2020 02:53:30
Marner is on hot seat 11 million a season Nylander makes less than 7 million 8 points seperated them marner played 9 fewer games in playoffs marner didn’t show up. Marner and Nylander were equal in playoffs Nylander star is rising fast this is year we see what we have in marner.

16 Oct 2020 10:49:40
This is the year we see what the whole team has David. They don’t have any more excuses. None.

Dubas has his guys now. Very few players on the team preceded him now. He’s got his coaching staff in place. His whole analytics crew up and running. There is literally nothing he can point at anymore and say it was someone else’s fault. Gone are the Zaitsev and Marleau contracts. Gone are the guys that play a style he doesn’t like. Hunters picks were buried, traded, or sent overseas, never even getting a chance, passed over in favour of Dubas’ picks.

This is his team. Set up his way. It’s all on him now if this team flops again this year.

Hockeyluvr just wrote the most real post I’ve read on this site

Dubas butt must be burning by now.

16 Oct 2020 13:39:15
@Craigger-I had contemplated the Fabrro angle, but getting Cernak in the next trade and having Bogosian and Lehtonen, I figured what are we going to do with him even if we did get him. Was easier to keep Liljegren and let him develop another year. We could probably squeeze them for Novak as well. You may entice TB a bit more, but to me, in their current situation, what choices do they really have. If we could take on the cap hit, we might get Kilron for a 2nd or 3rd right now.

About the rest. Top 4 if they are together this season, which is likely, I agree they probably have this year to prove they can. And as hockeyluvr said, Dubas has to be on the hot seat if we get the same old same old for results. With the talent we have accumulated, we should be a better "team". We have had all the assets necessary to build a more complete team, yet nothing so far has suggested we have.
