Leafs trade Dermott
Montreal trades Poehling

Now that defense is so deep, Dermott appears to be the odd one out. I don’t know if Montreal needs LHD still (last I heard they did), but Dermott is a damn good one on a very team friendly deal.

Leafs get another good forward prospect in Poehling to help replenish the depth at forward that has become alarmingly thin very quickly.

Poehling > Dermott

Montreal is set at LHD, and Poehling is a top prospect.

Habs seem pretty full on LHD.
NYI would seem like a good trade partner for Dermott.
Mayfield for Dermott.
NYI is stronger on the right side than the left. They save about 600,000 in cap space and get a LHD better and cheaper than Hickey. We get a solid bottom 4 RHD on an affordable contract going forward who could pair with Lehtonen or Sandin on the 3rd pair or with Muzzin on the 2nd and move Holl to 3rd pair.

Idk why but I can see dermott playing in Ottawa a young team that will give him the opportunity he wants but I also think Dubas would move 2mil of Holl and keep the cheaper dermott.

Poehling has a much better upside than Dermott. The Habs don't need a #7 d-man.

A #7? Lol.

Poehling is nothing special. His first pro season was pretty bad for a top prospect.

Dermott however would be fighting Romanov and mete for bottom pairing. He did have a better 1st pro year than poehling but Montreal still declines. Might take a 3rd or lesser forward prospect to make this deal work due to age difference not skill.

Chickenfoot

Poehling will be 22 in January. He is a year and half behind Dermott. Dermott has 157 regular season games played, plus 29 playoff games already. Poehling has 28 games played total. In other words, Dermott, as a defenseman, has more games played in the playoffs already than Poehling has combined.

As defensemen take longer to develop than forwards ( macerate age for defenseman to make the nhl is 23-24), the fact Dermott already has so many games played at his age, while many others his age do not, tells you that he is indeed a very good player that would be of great use to a Montreal team that has Edmundson, Mete, Chiarot, and Kulak as their LHD. Dermott is at least as good as any of those guys and not on a short term contract like most of them are either.

Poehling turns 22 in January. He is aging out of his opportunity quickly. If he doesn’t do anything this year, then he really is nothing special.

I fail to see how this trade favours the Leafs in any way, shape, or form. If anything, I thought it favoured Montreal.

Great points

I change my mind

Habs need to add something small

Poehling AHL 4Life.

Poehling is perfect fit to be bravos linemate in Charlotte

Go Checkers Go.

Thanks Craigger

I’m glad I was able to convince at least someone. Everyone who isn’t a Leafs fan seems to think all our players are overpriced and overrated. If Montreal has Dermott and we had Poehling and I put up the same trade, I would be roasted every time.

Loved your comment on Poehling and Bracco. I actually laughed out loud.

Guys who take the NCAA route usually enter the League at an older age. The concerning thing about Poehling, is how little he showed at the AHL and NHL level when given a chance. On the other hand, Dermott was given a chance at such a young age, not only because of his play at the AHL level, but because the Leafs were so short on D.
To me, both these guys have something to prove and if MTL needed D this year, I think they would do it, but they already invested in other players so I don't think they do it this year.

HOCKEYLUVR:

There's nothing wrong with Dermot, I'm not dissing your boy. I just happen to think that MTL is pretty well set at LHD.

Poehling had a great start to camp last year and then got a pretty bad concussion. As a guy whose had a few of those, they take a long time to recover from. He just never seemed to get it together after that.

Trading young prospects is a risky business, and the Habs aren't really in a position to have to make a risky move like that, so I wouldn't deal him.

Just my 2 cents.
