I know some are disgruntled that Schmidt went for only a 3rd and Toews went for two 2nds. It goes way beyond the picks value. When both deals were made, many teams had already signed guys or made their deals. These are the last two trades made and both teams were looking to shed cap and not take on salary. Could they have got more, maybe.

But Vegas sees

Schmidt for Piet, 3rd and 2.95 extra on their cap. A deal you make all day long

NYI sees

Toews for 2 2nds and that much closer to signing Barzal and Pulock. They likely had to pay someone to take Leo or Boychuk and their cap hits to make room. This way they see an actual return. Really not much different than us moving Johnsson or Kap.

I think these deals make less sense to us than to Vegas or NYI.

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't think I would make a schmidt for Petro deal all day long actually. Schmidt is a helluva player even if he has his demons. Petro is hitting an age where any team should be very, very concerned.

LL. Piet is 30 and Schmidt is 29. If worried about regression, at worst, Piet slowly regresses to Schmidt level in a few years. With only one year age difference between them, where would Schmidt's regression leave him.

02 Nov 2020 18:25:58
Schmidt also isn’t signed until he is 38 at a cost of almost $9M a year.

Pietrangelo has his minutes sheltered against the opposing teams top lines last year. Parayko was the de facto #1 on the team. Will be interesting to see how Pietrangelo does once he is the “go to” guy on the team again.

02 Nov 2020 18:46:15
No he isn't signed as long, but he still has 5 years left on his deal compared to Piet's 7. The implication was that regression is starting soon and that is what I was referring to when looking at comparing ages of players.
Vegas has a pretty solid d-core, it is not like he is going to be in a position like Rielly was before Muzzin and now Brodie got here. Piet played 24+ mins a night on average again last year. Parayko has allowed him to play a more offence role, not sure that means he can't play against the other teams top players anymore though.

02 Nov 2020 18:50:07
Exactly what I was about to type @HL lol.

Parayko was playing top lines not Petro. Petro is also signed until he is 38 at 9/ year. That's a contract they will regret.

02 Nov 2020 21:03:02
Also, I think I'm talking about the leafs not so much Vegas. I would probably have taken Towes for 2-2nds happily even if Brodie didn't sign.

02 Nov 2020 21:19:31
The contract at the end was not what you questioned. You implied Piet was about to regress, while Schmidt was fine. Down the road the contract will likely be an anchor. Piet is still one of the top D's in the League. imo.

02 Nov 2020 22:08:14
So jaybo is a top left side defensive pairing?
That was parayko partner most of last year
Faulk with petro was 2?
Dunn and bortuzzo was 3?

Ok then I don’t pay attention to them so guess it was what it was

All I know is once jaybo was out parayko got exposed and pretty bad.

02 Nov 2020 22:23:29
I think you both are right.

It’s a questionable move, no doubt, but Vegas insists on trying to win it all now. They want to be the big show in town. Now that the Raisers have relocated there, the Knights are trying desperately to keep the fans they have worked so hard to acquire as keep interest in the game of hockey before they become irrelevant.

It might pay off short term. Long term though, I really think they would be better off if they just kept Schmidt. But then again, who knows?

I’m not actually unhappy or put off that we missed out on Schmidt. I’m going to assume the opportunity never presented itself. At least, I hope it didn’t. We got Brodie, and that is about the best we could hope for given our cap situation and what was available at the time.

02 Nov 2020 22:46:08
Yes Craigger, it was indeed Jaybo and Parayko that took all the defensive assignments against the oppositions best teams. Not just last year either. But in the playoffs the year they won the cup as well. Pietrangelo was relegated to the offensive zone much more the last few years, and Parayko and Jaybo were assigned the defensive zone.

But you don’t need to take mine or LL word for it. There is an article on MLHS that outlines everything in far better detail than can be done here. “Why Maple Leafs should not back up the money truck for Pietrangelo”. I found it an interesting read.

02 Nov 2020 23:23:32
Yea, I don't get it either craigger. Piet played over a 1 min more a night than Parayko, almost 3 more than Bow and almost 4 more than Faulk on average during the season.
I also thought Parayko looked a little exposed in the playoffs. Piet played almost 3 mins more a night than Parayko in the playoffs and 4 mins more a night than Faulk. In the playoffs Parayko's OZ% starts went up because he was being exposed. Piet's DZ% starts went up to compensate. I guess you can shelter a guy playing 24-25 mins a night.

He is about to regress most likely if he hasn't started already. Clearly army though Krug was worth more. You don't let your captain walk and sign Krug otherwise.

03 Nov 2020 02:43:03
Army didn't let him walk. Piet turned him down. I think it was more Piet that decided to move on then Army choosing Krug.

03 Nov 2020 06:12:54
I’m not disagreeing with anyone I just wanted to make sure a little fly on the wall knows that jaybo actually helped parayko not the other way around

Mwah ha ha.

03 Nov 2020 16:24:34
Army was completely unwilling to negotiate because he clearly wasn't as concerned if Petro left.

03 Nov 2020 17:06:12
LL. Seriously? They offered him no less than $8M per year over 8 years. Meaning Piet left at least $2.5M on the table by going to Vegas. Stl also offered signing bonus and a partial NMC (two things they never do, including for Krug) .
It is more likely that Piet gave them the heads up that he is leaning elsewhere as soon as offers started pouring in. Vegas was offering a full NMC and tons of signing bonuses with a higher AAV than Stl could afford or would do.

03 Nov 2020 17:06:58
I see Craigger, a non committed rebuttal. lol.

03 Nov 2020 20:24:03
I doubt he wanted the signing bonus. Most players know that they will have so much held back this year's.

From what I heard he was offered 7.7 not 8. If army really wanted to keep his captain he would have gone to the extra 1.1/ yr.

03 Nov 2020 20:46:12
Lol. His deal is about 60% in signing bonuses and structured so that he gets paid the least during the next two years so he doesn't get hit as hard with escrow. It was all about the bonuses and structure.

03 Nov 2020 22:02:47
Misunderstood what you meant. Yeah it's a backloaded signing bonus.
