This is only if there is no chance Kesler tries for a comeback, so due diligence would be needed. Never know with that guy.
The draft this year could be a crap shoot if it goes on original schedule and it will be tough to know what you are getting in some cases.

Ana
Nylander 6.96

Tor
Kesler 6.875 LTIR
Olivier Groulx ELC
2021 1st

Anaheim helps their re-tool/rebuild by adding a talented to piece. They also move the Kesler contract. Anaheim takes the chance on the pick being very high, but in a year where many players can't be scouted, they take the chance it will be 5-10 and turn out no better than what they traded for.

Toronto takes on the Kesler contract and gets a solid 2 way centre prospect with some bite and what is looking like a top 10 pick. They also get $7M in cap space. This opens up cap space to make a move for another piece.

Seems like an underwhelming return for nylander. I know everyone hates on him, but he still holds good value.

I also do not know much about groulx. Anyone have a scouting report?

@Hurdemz. Likely a top 10 pick (maybe top 5), a solid centre prospect who is mid 6 projection and $7M in cap space for Nylander. That is underwhelming? What are you expecting?

09 Mar 2021 16:50:27
I had a similar take for the offseason which would make sense for the leafs but right now it doesn’t maybe add rackell and remove the prospect.

To take on a terrible LTIR contract and giving up an offensive stud, that is a very underwhelming return. Would need to add a 2nd high pick and a roster player at the minimum.

Also the Leafs are in first, so they are not in the business of swapping out stars for picks and prospects.

09 Mar 2021 17:30:23
@Leafs1994. Why wouldn't it work now? Explain the reasoning.
We would have $7M in cap space to add a player. Why switch out the solid prospect for Rakell and only have $3.2 in cap space? We would have $7M in cap space, prospects and 2 1sts to use to acquire a player. That kind of space and having those assets, should get us a better top 6 than Rakell. No?

09 Mar 2021 17:32:33
Does this make the leafs better. No way. Leafs are in contend now mode so you will not see them trade for cap space or prospects. You either are content in contending or you want to win.

09 Mar 2021 18:50:26
This isn't a linear deal guys. We would acquire another player with the cap space gained, so yes, we probably are better in the end.

@Torontobuds. So Nylander is worth more than a minimum top 10 pick, which may end up top 5 and a solid prospect where we take no cap back? So what are we looking at? Nylander for Lafreniere, Lemieux and a 2nd? More? Less?

09 Mar 2021 19:40:08
If they don't protect the pick it's a deal.

09 Mar 2021 22:37:10
To take on that extra cash and contract requires value. A top pick does not help the Leafs now who are in 1st and likely will not help for 2 more years. Not sure about the prospect, but still noy worth Nylander.

It’s a double edge sword here on Anaheim’s end

Getting nylander would be great however dealing kesler for him puts them way over cap

See LTIR contract still counts against cap and the amount it puts team over can now be replaced by a skater

So taking Kesler out puts them under the cap but since you are replacing him with same cap hit now they are back over cap by 3.8 million but with no LTIR contract to bail them out. Now they must waive 3 plus million worth of contracts just to fit Willy in.

Double edge sword so Anaheim passes.

Good catch Craigger.
So if I take your cap catch and what Torontobuds says should be added for Nylander's value and taking the LTIR

Nylander for Kesler LTIR, Rakell, Olivier Groulx, 2021 1st (top 10 almost guaranteed), 2021 2nd

Not a chance Nylander gets that return though.
