Buf
Kerfoot $3.5M
Engvall $1.25M

Tor
Girgensons $2.2M
Hagg $1.6M

Then

LA
Dermott $1.5M

Tor
Wagner $1.33
Anderson-Dolan ELC

Buffalo as noted by JdB(I believe), will have trouble reaching the Cap floor, but likely not want to spend real cash. Kerfoot adds lots of speed and his cap hit is a lot more than his salary remaining this year and next as compared to Girgensons. Engvall should get a bigger role in Buffalo and an being an RFA is still under team control. Since Hagg is a UFA end of season and not likely to re-sign (my opinion), they get two controlled players back which should help the Sabres. Can also now promote a guy like Fitzgerald and reward him for his play in the minors.

LA gets a D that is cost controlled for two seasons and plays the right or left side. They need RD right now, but will need quality LD when Doughty and Walker are back. Dermott fits the bill perfectly. They also move Wagner and his contract. With all their prospects, JAD is moveable.

Leafs get a defensive left shooting D that is used to playing the right side. Hagg is a good skater and could be a solid partner for Rielly. Hagg can PK and blocks a lot of shots while still moving the puck effectively. Girgensons can play all 3 forward positions, is a good size, skates well, is very good defensively and PK's. Wagner will bring energy and LW depth. JAD is a very good C/LW prospect that is over a point a game in the A this year. LA can afford to move JAD in order to get a D and also move on from Wagner and his contract as he doesn't seem to be in their plans anymore. Leafs clear about $1.2M in cap space.

Bunting Matthews Nylander
Ritchie Tavares Marner
Girgensons Kampf Kase
Wagner Spezza Simmonds
Semyonov Anderson
(Can always have Ritchie lower n the lineup and move Girg and Wagner up or put in Semyonov)

Rielly Hagg
Muzzin Brodie
Sandin Holl/Liljegren
(Could even consider putting Sandin with Brodie and Muzzin and Holl/Liljegren as third pair right now)

Also Leason only played about 8 1/2 mins again last night on the 4th line for the Caps. Get him too and the Leafs are looking much bigger and harder to play against without really giving up any skill because they added JAD as well.

Agree0 Disagree0

Not to nit-pick because I like all the moves, cap works but no margin for deadline, and we lose two good PK guys.

I see Girgenson does some PK for Buffalo so maybe not a big loss.

I’ve mentioned both Buffalo players before so that trade is good with me.

Dermott is like Engvall, sometimes real good but most times underwhelming so I’m also ready to see what we can get back.

12 Nov 2021 17:15:56
Rsears-Nit pick all you like. lol
We don't really have any cap space now for the deadline either though.
We gained $1.2M in cap space and have Mikheyev's and Mrazek's LTIR if needed. Hagg also penalty kills don't forget, and Leafs could use a good PK d-man imo.

12 Nov 2021 20:29:17
Was speaking more of PK forwards.

12 Nov 2021 23:02:20
I like your targets very much. Girgy I’m a big fan of and have been since his rookie year. Problem is when healthy Buffalo and their fans love him as well. Being that he has same term as kerfoot and dealing 1 center/ winger for another just doesn’t seem productive

Hagg I also like, not on the girgy level or even close but still enough to try and become a leaf. With being a ufa he seems like a perfect target for the leafs

I just do t see Buffalo being that much into Engvall.

I don’t see Buffalo dealing term players but will want term back

Eakin, vinnyH, hayden, drakeC and basically every D on main roster not named dahlin.

Buffalo
Is in need of a RD as well.
Maybe a Kerfoot and Holl for Hayden hagg could work and to make up differance of deal Buffalo can even retain 800K of hagg.

5.5 out for 1.55

But then again maybe I’m wrong and Buffalo will trade girgy in this deal. U just never know what thst Buffalo gm is ever thinking now do u.

12 Nov 2021 23:46:24
I really hate doing this to anyone but it hurts more when I got to do it to u. I mean your knowledge passion insight and writing skill is top notch and when I see that style of font and paragraphing come along this site I read it no questions asked.

That said this LA deal is meh at best. Not for Toronto. It’s meh for LA. I mean if a team needs a solid vet D LA has it in edler. If a team needs a playoff proven warrior who seems to of been around forever loom no further than maata. The guy is only 27. I was sure he was 30 minimum. Shocked to see that number. You want youthful enthusiasm check out bjornfot. Might end up making us really hate the muzzin trade. Then above all that a guy I wanted before he was done. Leafs take korshkov and LA Kole Clague. That’s 4LD. I mean until drew and walker return the right side seams thin. Yes they have Clarke and grans but they are 2 years away minimum. Maybe 1 for Clarke but that’s at best. Durzi is ready so we may see him soon but all in all LA may want a place setter and again Holl fits that bill. I mean Dermott does play RD but does he really or is it because leafs said he can. Who knows but for some reason even with his bad start Holl is on a dozen teams list and since LA doesn’t want to fall too far behind before their star D gets back they may just try to get him.

1,3,4,5,13,14,19,20 and 39. That’s 9 from the 2017 draft that are legit top 6 or top pairing players. Heck it can be argued that 5 are the best on their respective teams. However once u get past those 9 players the rest of that draft or the first 2 rounds of it anyway are bottom feeders on their nhl teams or AHL lifers. Rough draft. Like many JA-D fits the roll for any team to trade for and make a project that could turn his career around. Problem is 31 players picked before him can all be put in that same category. Heck 11 already have got that chance.

Guess the good thing is JA-D can be had for pretty low and worst case is you get a point for game AHL er.

Holl and prospect for Wagner JA-D

Might have to think of getting Lemieux in a bigger deal.

Again I could be way off on this assessment as it’s very rare you go 0-2 on the same rumor form and the fact I only see Holl as logical dman going to either team when u never even mentioned him might just make me the one who is thinking half ass backwards here

Maybe it’s the air I don’t know.

Rsears. I knew that, I just believe a pk D is tougher to be good at.

JdB. I have no more clue than anyone what GM's will do. Just put my thinking behind my trade proposals. Who know what they will do.

13 Nov 2021 00:10:46
It was more a cheap shot at buffalos gm. I have no clue what he is smoking on most of his deals.

13 Nov 2021 14:08:25
@JdB. Your insight is always welcome. I don't always agree, but often do. Like everyone else, I am speculating. I have no inside knowledge and don't claim to. Even those who typically hate my trade suggestions, I still like their insight if it is more of an explanation than "GM hangs up phone". lol

Buffalo deal. Does it really matter who is on the Sabres right now or for the next two - three seasons? With moving Eichel, they are going full rebuild again. They have no star goalie for the immediate future. They signed or nabbed a bunch of guys who become UFA at end of season. Kerfoot gives them a guy they can put in the top 6, is signed as long as Girgs, but makes less in real pay with a bigger cap hit. They are going to need bigger cap hits. Engvall is RFA at end of his deal where Hagg and Girgs are UFA like Kerfoot. Fans love Girgs, but from a business standpoint, he is likely gone end of next season if he doesn't see big improvement in the on-ice product. I could be way off, but in a lot of ways, doing it now, would make sense for the Sabres.

LA deal. For this season, yes they need an RD. Moving forward though, they have 3 signed long term. Doughty, Walker and Roy. Where does Holl fit in after this year? Do they want a $2M press box insurance D?

On the left side, Edler and Maata are UFA. Leaves them Anderson, Bjornfot and Clague. All 23 or under. Dermott is an NHL D imo. He will be 25 soon, 220 NHL games and 22 playoff games under his belt. The other 3 only have 153 NHL games combined and no playoff experience. If an RD goes down next season, they have Strand, Durzi and Spence to call up. An LD goes down and if Maata and Edler have walked in the off-season, they have no NHL experience to call up. Dermott age wise fits better than Holl does when you look at the ages of the players they are using this year. Can Dermott play the right side effectively long term? Don't know. But it shouldn't matter to LA because they don't need a long term RD, just need someone who can do it now for a while or moving forward fill in if necessary.

The Kings can't seriously be thinking they are contenders this year, but are trying to make the playoffs and give all these young guys experience is my guess. Wagner does not seem to be in their plans and JAD is behind other prospects it would seem. They would be lucky to get a 5th or 6th for Wagner at the moment and what is JAD's value if he stays in the minors? A 3rd or 4th? So basically it is Dermott for a 3rd and 5th at best value wise and we are also taking a contract they don't seem to want. Doesn't seem like a bad deal for LA to me. A youngish NHL D on a reasonable contract for a player they seem to have no plans for that is signed for another season and a prospect that may not ever be more than a 4th liner on their depth chart.

JAD skates well, has some offensive upside, plays with a lot of energy and forechecks well, while not being overly big. Doesn't that remind you of exactly what Dubas has been signing, drafting or traded for? Bunting, Kase, Semyonov, Anderson, Steeves, Gogolev, Amirov. They may not all forecheck hard or be the same in every way, but all are similar in a lot of ways imo.

Anyhow. Even though I try and think these deals out before I post them, I have no clue if it would ever happen or if either side has any interest in any deal, even if I believe it should or could. This is just two more to add to that list.
Thanks for all your comments and insight.

13 Nov 2021 15:58:39
I guess in the end on Buffalo deal anything works as any vet player is probably available so your deal actually works good after explaining more in detail

LA I do like the idea of JA-D. Give er a shot worse case he is a point a game AHL er. Wagner is definetly worth asking LA the price for

As for Dermott and Holl I guess I need to think of both as tomato tomaato. Dermott makes more sense for LA and Holl for Buffalo,

Good board room talk. That’s how negotiation in any walk of life happens. Back and forth discussion with positive feedback on both ends. Insults non existent. It’s called respect. Learn it and you’ll be able to
handle the big wigs in your job much easier and they’ll take you more serious once you learn how to have a conversation properly.

Like you said the whole gm hangs up line is a real quick way of getting rudely dismissed. Not good for either party and later once that person who comments line this throws out a proposal more are likely to dismiss his trade rudely as well. See how life works,

Once again great response.
