Kerfoot to San Jose

For

Jasper Weatherby
Scott Ready

Jesper is 6'4 216 C/LW
He is 23 turning 24 in January
Finished up school @north Dakota last year
In his rookie year no AHL experience

Here is my raw Hyman replacement. Not this year but over time. He played 3 years in college electing to sign nhl deal instead of playing final year. His stats are very comparable to hymans college stats. The guy is a worker much like Hyman
is. He keeps improving. I say get him before the rest of league catches onto this non household name

If things don't go Hyman like for weatherby than Reedy is a pretty solid backup plan if not an even closer version to Hyman than weatherby is.
6'2 205 RW smooth skating forechecking with a passion to get dirty. Spent 4 years in Minnesota and is now in AHL. Very Hyman like career so far and what's better then 1 Hyman. The possibility of having 2.

There's my find of the day

2.6 million cap savings gets leafs out of the LTIR usage and now can accumulate cap.

Even when mrazek and Mikheyev are back and with Woll sent down leafs end up 1.1 under cap making them able to accumulate enough cap at deadline for a 7-10 million worth of players.

Small hit now big gain later

Strategy 101

Kerfoot signed extra year and sanjose needing a versatile veteran winger to help this group get back in playoffs. 1st of many depth moves San Jose will make costing them prospect capital they have accumulated over the last 3 plus years for a trip to the playoffs as the big 3 D and Couture aren't getting younger. Plus with hertl an ufa this summer getting veteran guys with term might be a good strategy.
Not a huge upgrade but it's a start for San Jose still are 6 million under the cap. That's 30 plus million at deadline time. If they still in playoff spot come that time watch out the upgrades will come their way. If not kerfoot still gives them an extra year of service and they'll have 18-21 million to replace 7 roster spots. Not a bad situation to be in

Hope u enjoyed the read

Interesting idea. A little quality for quantity of size. I was hoping Dubas could find that guy that may be able to compliment in a top 6 role. I wasn't sure either of these guys could. You think one may be possible?
What about Hamaliuk? Think SJ would part with him in a Kerfoot based deal? I like his potential.

I can’t criticize Dubas for not trying
Simmonds is too old/ slow for top 6 now
Clifford round 2 I feel is same as simmonds
Thornton tried was good for a week then blah
Foligno shoulda did the trick but was a flop
Vesey is now a fringe nhler
Galchenyuk worked but then nothing more
Mikhayev would be if he could score. Still fringe top6
Bunting a solid fringe top 6 guy
Ritchie I feel if Matthews gets going as will Ritchie

Internally
Grundstrom might of worked but muzzin was needed
Moore coulda worked but thank god for Campbe
Timashov was a one week wonder
FGauthier couldn’t keep up
Engvall has the speed but is a fringe nhl player
Korshkov we will never know but got galchynuk

Brown was an answer but list him to lose zaitsev
Johnsson probably fringe answer but cap casualty

Kapanen makes no sense. Yeah couldn’t play left side and Matthews didn’t seem to like but why on earth give up a guy making 3.2 and still an RFA vs trading a 3.5 cap hit who is an ufa at end of it. Don’t know what Dubas love for kerfoot is. Sure they needed kadri gone and thought they killed 2 birds with one stone by getting a RHD puck moving dman at half price and what seemed to be a perfect 3C who got 40 pts and played solid defensive hockey and doesn’t go brain dead in the playoffs. Seemed like a win at the time until barrie showed us all his defensive non play and kerfoot still defensive and fast just isn’t what leaf fans want in a top 6 guy. So regardless of how we all feel of kadri trade at the time it was needed and it just didn’t work. So why not cut your losses and just keep kapanen and deal johnsson and kerfoot. That’s my struggle

Mason Marchment for denis Malgin. LOL
We all loved marchment. He was at time a solid 4th line er. He hit and used body well. Goes to Florida and now he is what they thought they coulda had in Hyman but he didn’t sign with them so now 6 years later they get to try and Hyman the heck outta marchment possibly breaking even with the whole ordeal

So it’s not lack of trying. I mean yeah Bennett woulda been nice and many really wanted him but looking at it from management standpoint did they not see him as another kadri head case. Who knows but seems the Florida appeal can change people. Not so much Toronto. Could of been just another failed try. Who knows

Let’s see all the names that could of been before they made name for themselves

Bertuzzi, terry, kunin, tanev, zacha, greenway, Lemieux, mangiapane, Garland, copp, puljujarvi, Anderson. That’s 12 names while they were 1 or 2 years in that have been explored on this site one way or another. 9 guys that would cost the leafs a 1st and roster player minimum. The other 3 would cost a bit less but still enough that if it don’t work becomes a waste

That leaves us searching for the next big thing.

Every team has 1 or 2 guys that could work on the cheap. However, how many will it take before you find that gem. It’s not an easy task even though everyone makes it appear easy and problem solved if Dubas just read out trades. Too bad it’s not that easy.

Wow. I was just curious what you thought about Hamaliuk.

I answered in general at end. You can place and name in place of “every team has 1 or 2 guys that”

All names we can come up with all have 1 thing in common. Unknown certainty if they can fill a top 6 roll thus making it very difficult to trade nhl player for.

I know you did. You seem a little - on edge lately JdB.
