You're comparing a top 3-5 player in the world to Marner? That's a bit unfair to Mathews.

Why would the coyotes trade for Mathews right now while giving up prospects and picks?

I never said matthews goes now but Arizona have few players signed they will start building a team and Marner would b nice for them. Matthews. Is someone they will try to get in free agency.

The problem is term. You can't build a franchise ground up with 4 years of a player.

Ideally you're hoping for someone on an ELC that signs 8 years afterwards (think McDavid) or at least a bridge so you can try and extend while maintaining control.

Arizona gives up assets, continues to be brutal, has no one to play with Marner. Now by the time he's a UFA and tired of being there they have an Ottawa or Detroit looking team.

The reason these massive contracts are so hard to move is because only a contender wants 2-3 years of a superstar but a contender can't eat an 11 million cap hit without massive retention (unless you're Vegas apparently)
