Lots of talk about a possible Severson availability. I'd mimic the Muzzin trade as a comparable, both a top 4 D with 1 year more left in term on their deal.

Muzzin went for a 1st plus two B prospects both drafted in the 2nd round, Grundstrom and Durzi.

To TOR: D - D. Severson (20% retained)

To NJD: D - J. Holl + 2022 1st + F - N. Robertson + D - J. Duszak + 2023 4th.

The 2023 4th is paid for the small salary retention. If you recall, a 4th was paid for a 50% salary retention for Foligno, so for the full year reduce it to 20% but same price.

The pieces going back are comparable if not better than what went for Muzzin. Robertson is a higher end prospect than either Grundstrom or Durzi. Holl is included to send an NHL player and help offset salary.

Buffalo get a younger RFA D for an expiring UFA

4th was to retain for half a year not the remainder of this season and the next one. That costs a bit more.

So yes I too would like Severson and I agree with RLF it’s an overpayment.

Muzzin was a stronger offensive Dman than Severson at time of trade and a bigger physical presence who played stronger on D as well.

Thats how I see it.

So a first and two B prospects would be my starting point. So which two B prospects? I’m okay with Amirov (tho this year may be an anomaly for him) and also okay with Voit or Abruzzese.

If NJD want more I’d extend the trade to include McLeod who I also like. Now N. Robertson needs to be added with another piece (I. e. an NHL player today) and for me that player is Travis Dermott or Justin Holl.

It may not get it done but there are other teams that have what the Leafs need that may be more willing than the Devils.

@Rsears. Actually I am not sure it is enough if we are asking for 20% retention. The point was that T-buds thought Kerfoot, Ritchie, Liljegren, Amirov and a 1st was a massive overpay for both Severson and McLeod. Not sure how this is an overpay and his trade idea isn't.

Yes Liljegren now a young everyday dman, plus the 1st, plus Amirov and Kerfoot is why it's an overpayment.
I may value Liljegren and Amirov more than you though.

You are forgetting NJ taking Ritchie and Toronto getting McLeod. Holl should still have more value than Ritchie right now. Robertson could very well have more value than Amirov. The 1sts are even. I am giving Kerfoot and Liljegren, where you have given Duszak a 4th. I think two players you are giving up have more value than two of mine and vice versa, yet I am getting McLeod, you are getting 20% reduction. I think you need to add, you think I paid too much. Is there really that much difference?

I guess you're right, I guess adding in Ritchie and taking back McLeod is good. Robertson does have more value than Amirov, that is why I included him. NJ would get our top prospect and a lesser prospect in that deal.

I guess no need to include Kerfoot and Liljegren IMO, they are already getting a top prospect and a 1st +.

Hold on a sec. Am I understanding what you are getting at correctly. So you think NJ will trade Severson and McLeod for Ritchie, Amirov and a 1st?
