Leafs HAVE to get rid of some salary!

Buy out Clifford and Simmons (why they were extended I will never understand).
Ask Dubas?
Mikheyev walks as he wasn't happy with his roll and will likely want too much money in his next contract.
Kase's injury issues make him replaceable.
Engvall is effective defensively and depending on his asking price should be retained.
Giordano would have to take a Spezza special contract to be resigned (well maybe $1 - $1.25).
Spezza retires!
Lyubushkin needs to be resigned (3 x $2.5)

Now for the trade!

To Leafs: Lawson Crouse (to replace Mikheyev)

To Arizona: Kerfoot, Mrazek, Holl ($9.3)

To make the deal attractive to the Coyotes: Leafs 1st round pick in 2022, Arizona native and US Olympian Mathew Knies and a prospect of their choice off the Marlies.
Perhaps Nick Abruzzese or equal compensation.

Kerfoot and Holl will both fit nicely into the Coyotes starting lineup next season with only a one year salary commitment left on their contracts.
Coyotes need a starting goaltender and though Mrazek is often hurt, he can get the job done when he is healthy.
The two years left on Mrazek's contract will be a stumbling point.

Crouse needs to be resigned but will cost about the same as what Mikheyev will be asking while bringing a much more physical presence to the team as well as offensive upside (4 x $3 - $3.5)

A new contract for Campbell is needed.
His asking price will determine whether he will be back or not.
Likely something around (4 x $4)

The last question: What to do with Nylander?
If there is a team that covets him enough to make an offer that will open up sufficient salary space to justify the trade and will bring a top 5 pick or "A" prospect on an ELC

Some adjustments are probably required but this would be the framework for Leafs off-season.

Agree0 Disagree4

You lost me at blaming Spezza.

16 May 2022 02:37:44
The salary you shed is Nylander. He is a third line player making 7 million dollars. The writing is on the wall he is being traded

Dubas has got the gift for finding players on the scrapheap I expect that to continue. Flushing Nylander gives leafs 7 million Kase can be signed on the cheap if you get half a season and playoffs out of him it’s ok

Tavaras maybe slipping a bit but Matthews and Marner will ascend higher next season they are not in their prime yet. You don't need Nylander you can get up to 3 players for what your paying Nylander.

@Mackin Nylander is a first line player and one of the best in the world. He just needs to be on the right line.

One thing I can never doubt with Nylander, is the talent.

16 May 2022 07:43:12
Agreed ll he dominated with matthews and marner for the 4 shifts they used that.

WB49.
Did I read the ARZ proposal correctly?
Leafs get Crouse for Kerfoot, Mrazek, Holl, Knies, a 2022 1st and Abruzzese? That would be a massive overpay for Crouse imo.

I agree with some of your signings, but I doubt Nylander gets a top 5 pick in return. The A prospect plus is more likely.

I’m not sure who y’all on here are that every time I come onto this site you have been trading Willie? But he’s had two 30++! goal seasons and he’s not done yet at getting better. Y’all don’t have a clue to what makes a good hockey player. I wisited a few TBL sites during this playoff series and the two players that Tampa was worried most about was Matthews and Nylander and not Marner. So why are y’all so sold on this kid when no other team is that worried about him that they are playing against? Y’all are just lost. If you want money off the books trade Marner and get rid of that ridiculous $11 mill off the books.

Go Leafs Go!

@rideshog.
If you were as knowledgeable as you think you are, you would see that TB does not have one player on their team that won't compete, no matter how many goals they score. You would also have a tough time finding any SC champion roster that had one of their top players be a player that refused to compete physically.

Look through past Champion rosters, with the exception of Kessel, name one SC champion that had a top player payed the kind of money Willy makes (feel free to adjust for cap era) that refused to battle and that didn't produce 5 on 5. Also with Pitt, Kessel was on the 3rd line and Pitt had Crosby, Malkin, Letang etc in their prime. Kessel was a complimentary piece and was shipped to Arz because his team mates couldn't stand him any longer.

If Nylander is your version of an excellent hockey player (meaning complete player, not just skilled), it is odd that you question others hockey knowledge.

Of course it’s a massive overpay for Crouse.
But what you’re actually paying for is getting rid of Kerfoot, Holl and Mrazek’s contracts which total $9.3 million against Leafs cap.
Crouse can play second line left wing (20 goal scorer for Arizona) when Mikheyev leaves.

Blame Spezza?
Never said any such thing.
Love the guy.
But when the time comes, retirement beckons!

17 May 2022 02:55:16
@WB49 there are massive overpays and then there is ridiculous. Kerfoot has value. Holl even has some value. Mrazek is the only one with negative value. Sorry, moving all those assets as well is foolish imo.
