A different type of trade, moving quality for quality

To NYI: F - W. Nylander + D - T. Niemela

To TOR: D - N. Dobson + F - W. Dufour

Both teams trade a star a different position and a prospect from the position they are receiving.

NYI scoring continues to be poor and Nylander would instantly be a top line RW

Dobson would immediately become the Leafs top RHD

Agree1 Disagree1

Follow up to the trade above

To TOR: F - B. Boeser

To VAN: F- T. Voit + 2024 2nd*

*Turns to a 1st if the Leafs make the cup final

Leafs line up

Bunting Matthews Marner
Kerfoot Tavares Boeser
Engvall Kampf Jarnkrok
Hunt Holmberg ZAR

Rielly Dobson
Brodie Liljegren
Gio Timmins
Sandin Holl

I'd still like the Leafs to add at LW as well beyond these.

Up until this year, I would have been all over this. I am pretty sure I have posted something with Willy and Dobson a long time ago. Now though, Willy is playing the best, most consistent hockey I have ever seen him play. He is playing with compete, he even battles, he is driving the net and even putting his body in jeopardy at times. I don't think Dobson would impact the team as much as Willy does right now. Something I never thought I would say.

Good proposal though. Very tempting for both teams I would think.

Potential off season move. The Leafs playoff problems has been their lack of scoring. Don’t think it is time to trade your top scorer.

20 Jan 2023 15:21:25
I don't think Van trades Horvat for Voit and a 2nd that isn't even for this draft. If they don't get better offers, I'd be shocked.

20 Jan 2023 15:40:42
Offseason move this would be ok but not right now him and matthews are cooking.

20 Jan 2023 16:00:12
It's Boeser and not Horvat. However, I see what you're saying. My pushback is that he is NOT playing up to his contract and that's what hurts his value. He's paid $6.5M and has 9 goals on the year so far.

20 Jan 2023 16:01:20
Ya you're probably right, an off-season trade may be better. This would allow the Leafs to not worry about trying to re-sign Nylander who likely commands around $8M - $9M.

I like the Isles trade a lot. but would not do the Vancouver one. As others have said would hate to lose all the scoring that WIlly is currently providing and i am not keen on paying Boeser $6,650,000 for the next 2 seasons after this one. Sooooo.

I would instead (are you ready for this RLF) go after Meier. he only has 4 points less than Willy and could play on LW. that would move Jankrok over to the RW which from what i think i heard he plays better. it does not improve our top 6 per say but it does solve our need for a #1 D everyone thinks we need and might quite all those wanting the often injured Chychrun. he's signed for less and currently has 10 goals, which would in turn help our forwards. Morgan Rielly has no goals and combined the entire Leafs D only has 12 goals.

This would also then possibly allow us to resign Meier to a long term deal for between 8.5 to 9 mil front loaded contract and even allow us to resign Bunting at 4mil for 6- 8 years or maybe pursue RLF's favorite guy Bennett and let Bunting walk.
we'd still be able to have Murray and Samsonov (re-signed for 3mil @ 2years) and our usual rag tag bunch of bottom 6 guys making less than 1mil. or. if you think Samsonov and either Woll or Kallgren are ready we trade Murray off and use his cap to improve bottom 6.

20 Jan 2023 16:32:59
I definitely like Meier, but he will certainly cost more than Boeser. That's why I went this route. You're right, I'm not keen on paying Boeser $6.5 for another 2 years, but if he can get above 25 G playing with Tavares its a good buy low guy.

20 Jan 2023 16:44:36
@T-buds. My bad. I guess with all the Horvat talk, I had him in my head. For Boeser, your value is pretty close I think. That said, trading a now interested Nylander for a D and replacing him with a guy who often looks disinterested (Boeser) I wouldn't be on board with.

Loxley. Meier would not likely work out as hoped imo. Acquisition price will be big. He has that $10M qualifying offer card he can play. No guarantee he wants to resign here. Going after big names rarely pushes a team over the top. It is the depth moved that are usually the difference makers.

20 Jan 2023 16:51:56
I'd be very interested in Meier depending on the cost he's an impact player and is physical. If our d isn't going to be physical it would be nice to have physical forwards to wear down our opponents.

20 Jan 2023 20:22:18
@RLF But going after Meier this year means we have him as a replacement for next year in case we have to trade Nylander, this would be a trade simply to change up the type of player and gets us a nother top Dman in Dobson. one who is out scoring the entire Leafs D corps. I just figured if your gonna add Boeser as proposed i'd rather go for Meier, of course they'd have to gage his interest in re-siging with us of course.

20 Jan 2023 21:33:05
My point Loxley is Meier could just not sign an extension and see if the Leafs qualify him for $10M. Do one year at $10M and the walk his way to UFA status. If they don't qualify him, he becomes a UFA. Since he is an RFA, at his age and production etc, he could be a huge gamble UNLESS it is a sign and trade.
Also remember, Nylander was already traded for Dobson, so he already is Nylander's replacement.

21 Jan 2023 00:00:36
I have never been a Boeser fan and would rather Leafs spent their assets on a difference maker.
Something the overpaid Boeser is not!

Trading Nylander for Dobson is equal in terms of skill and value but would leave Leafs far to weak at right wing for my tastes.
Dufour is still just a prospect and can not replace Nylander on the first line.

If Islanders were interested in Nylander and Niemala for Dobson and Wahlstrom trade I would certainly feel it was worth consideration.

21 Jan 2023 01:22:07
@RLF i get your point that Meier could walk away. that's where Leafs would have to talk to player before taking that risk and gage his interest. or like you said do a sign and trade

also dunno what you mean when you say Nylander was already traded for Dobson? either way i still still Dobson would be a great add to the blue line to add offense on right side.

21 Jan 2023 02:44:28
@Loxley. You said Meier would be a replacement next year for Nylander incase we have to trade him, but this also gets us another top dman in Dobson. Dobson would have only been acquired by trading Nylander for him. Hence, Meier is already Nylander's replacement as he was already traded for Dobson.

21 Jan 2023 18:29:56
@RLF sorry I see what you mean. I guess I was not clear by replacement for next year. myvtjought was if the leafs don't think they will be able to re-sign Willy. trade him now. so we get a top d. and by acquiring Meier this year his skill replaces what we lose by trading Willy. so we get a better LW and jarnkrok moves to RW which is where he apparently more comfortable. so although we don't add to top 6.we do add a significant cheap piece to D. then just need to work on bottom 6 like McBain or Bjudstad from yotes.
