Nobody in their right mind, pays that for Mathews as a rental. It just won't happen.

Matthews wouldn't be a rental. Sign and trade is more like it to Anaheim. Both teams win in this trade. Anaheim accelerates their rebuild. Leafs take a different approach to create a more balanced team with focus on fixing their defence through free agency and the draft. Draft Canadian hockey players that can step into the lineup right away (Fantilli and Wood)

Why wouldn't the Ducks just draft and keep Fantilli? He is pretty much unanimously the consensus 2nd overall pick only because Bedard is in this draft or he'd be the 1st overall. He's a big power forward who just put up almost a goal a game against men in the NCAA at 18 years old. He will be cost controlled for at least the next 3 years and then still an RFA, whereas Matthews will be UFA end of next season.
The Ducks have lots of cap space at $39M, but Terry, Zegras and Dysdale all need new deals (as does Comtois) . With Matthews in the mix, that $39M could get ate up pretty quick and they only have 4 D-men signed for next season. The only one of note being Fowler, the rest are all young kids.
