Leafs trade Domi 2nd round pick 2026 third 2027 Steeves Niemela

Chicago trades Ryan Donato

Chicago might think they can turn Domi into a scorer like they did Bertuzzi

Domi can't score and isn't good in his own end . He just floats around inside his own blue line not hitting anyone

This is the 2nd time I have seen Donato come up and massive overpays for this guy. Yes, he can put up decent points and play on the PP if needed. He is another guy who is not great in his own end. Not good on the draw. Doesn't PK. He's not worth a ton. Probably can get him for a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

So the word has been Donato would fetch a 3rd Rd pick. Why sell the entire farm for a depth scorer.

I agree this might be a bit of an overpayment but Donato is a good 3rd line center with offensive skills as witnessed by his 15 goals and 14 assists so far this year.
There are very few of these players available.
He is certainly a better target than Yani Gourde, Brock Nelson, Scott Laughton and about half the acquisition cost of a Ryan O’Reilly.

You say Donato is not very good in his own end, but of Chicago’s top 8 players he is one of only two players who’s plus/ minus stat is single digits at -5

Bedard -25
Teravainen - 14
Bertuzzi -24
Taylor Hall (traded) -15
Foligno -15
Vlasic -10
Jones -9

That would indicate to me that he is at least somewhat responsible in his own end.

I think Donato is a perfect fit on the Leafs and wouldn’t carry near the cost in picks and prospects that most of the other name players would.

To Chicago: 2025 - 2nd round pick and a decent prospect like Robertson OR, Grebenkin OR Niemala.

Agree with RLF…. Huge overpay for Donato. No way Steeves and Neimela. Domi and Robertson gets it done.

For one, you know +/ - is not the best indicator for defensive play. Secondly, the top players are not the always the top point producers. If Donato was a top player, why is the the 3/ 4 centre and not the 1/ 2 centre?
Dickinson has been their #2 centre. He is only a -6, even though he starts in his own end a lot more than Donato does. Donato has always had talent and been able to put up about 30 points. Don't you think there is a reason he is 28, on his 5th team and never made more than $2M a year? It's because has not been very good defensively and lacks attention to detail on that side of the puck.

His +/ - success is largely because they shelter him as much as possible. Next to Bedard, Donato has the 2nd most offensive zone starts among their regular centres. Typically 3/ 4 centres aren't at the top of the teams list for O-zone starts. The Leafs shelter Domi the same way when he is at centre. Donato is also poor on the dot, so hard to put him at centre for D-zone faceoffs because you need to start with the puck to get out of your end the quickest as you know. I will just stop there.

Interesting analysis but I think you are being awfully hard on Donato.
With Miller and Frost gone the pickings for a 3rd line center are shrinking.
Brock Nelson is no better than Donato defensively yet has a cap hit of $6M and Lou’s asking price is supposedly a 1st round pick for a rental.
Yani Gourde is out 6 - 7 weeks after hernia surgery.
Ryan O’Reilly for a second go round with the Leafs is a huge NO for me.
Scott Lawton is a decent fit but I read that Briere is asking for a 1st round pick for him.
Leafs need to do something to bring in secondary scoring or they won’t go far in the playoffs.

Rather get Dickinson.
