Why on earth with the Islanders do a sign and trade for marner? They can just sign him. The eighth year is meaningless.

23 May 2025 23:41:25
They give up a young, top pairing, RHD for the 8th year? Don't think so.

A lot of nothing for Dobson a 25 year old, top 4, RHD.
Islanders never agree.
Reilly, whom Leafs would love to off load, for McTavish and a 3rd makes absolutely no sense from Anaheim’s perspective.
Reilly is well into the down side of his career.
Brock Nelson will be 34 years old by the beginning of next season. A 3 year contract takes him to 37 years old.
Gourde will be 34 before the end of the year.
A 4 year contract takes him to 38.
Brandon Tanev will be 34 by the end of the year.
A two year contract takes him to 36.
Please, for god sakes, no more seniors on the Leafs.
The NHL is becoming more and more of a young man’s game with each passing year.
Your lineup, with Chris Tanev (35), Tavares (34) if resigned and OEL (33), has the Leafs the oldest team in the league.
With virtually no draft picks and no prospects (Cowan and maybe Danford) this seems like a very poor way to build a team.

Better off to spend and commit as little money as possible to this years weak crop of free agents and wait until next year when the free agent class is the best in over a decade.

Shanahan by rumours was one of the reasons marner didn’t want to sign with Leafs.

David1mackin.

Very interesting!
I had not heard or read that.
Was Shanahan’s departure an attempt to rectify that rift between Marner and the Leafs in the hopes of resigning him?

I have never been a Marner fan since he held the Leafs to ransom with threats of signing an offer sheet to force the Leafs to accede to his financial demands coming out of his ELC.
At the same time I recognize that he is a top 10 - 12 forward in the League and simply can not be replaced.
Quite the dilemma for the Leafs and Marner who will be vilified by Leaf Nation for turning down the trade with Carolina for Rantanen and then walking away with Leafs receiving no compensation.
