Mathews will stay if they pay exactly what he wants. That's been the deal with both contracts so far.

Let’s say to replace Marner you can get 2 players from free agent market. Who can they sign that make them better? Rumours are out that Bennett doesn’t want to play in Toronto.

Treliving is in a mess if this team regresses and it will if they don’t resign Matthews. Brad could be fired 1 year from now. Marner is top 5 player in the League. Just a huge mess.

Matthews is already signed for 3 more seasons (iirc) . Tre doesn't need to sign him.

I would disagree and put Marner in Catagory 2 behind the real top players.

Marner does not fit into this group but does fit into the next level of players with Rantanen, Tkachuk and many others.
That said, I completely agree that if Marner leaves Leafs will definitely regress as the 2025 free agent class is very weak and does not provide any replacements for Marner.
The 2026 free agent class, on the other hand, is full of difference makers!
