Pittsburgh trade Bryan Rust
I think Marner wants to hook up with Pittsburgh. The Pens can't afford both Marner and Rust. It goes a ways to replacing Marner 100 points and Rust only makes $5.1 million.

That. $10 million contract of Karlsson is killing the Penguins . The only real way they become an instant playoff team is bringing in a top tier player. Marner enjoyed playing with Crosby and enjoyed playing under Dubas. It gives Marner the 8 th year. This will be the last big contract Marner signs. He may sign another contract but it’s not going to be for $13 million or whatever he signs for.
To sign Marner they will have to shed salary and it’s not Karlsson Crosby Malkin or Latang that’s already $26 million. If they sign Marner it pushes cap close to $40 million. The cap next season is $95.5 million this would be a worse cap problem than Toronto has been facing the last few years. The Leafs need to be a 3 line scoring Team. The Pens select 10th overall they have never bottomed out so Marner better be aware that when Crosby Malken and Letang retire there is nothing left. Dubas had high draft picks in Toronto the Pens 2024 drafted 44th overall 2023 drafted 14th overall 2022 drafted 21 overall 2021 they drafted 58 th 2020 they drafted 52 overall 2019 they drafted 21 overall.
Dubas is in a world of hurt if he couldn’t win in Toronto how is he going to win in Pittsburgh this year they have the 10th overall pick. There are no franchise players @ 10th overall unless you get extremely lucky. No Team needs Marner more than Pittsburgh Dubas will lose his job if he doesn’t hit home runs in free agency. He has nothing from the Penguins drafting.

I don't Mariner wants to leave the LEAFS this year he might settle for a $11mil/ maybe $10Mil short term deal (1 or 2 yrs) . I think he realizes he is this close to the cup and the LEAFS only need a few impactful supporting pieces (where the discount would help) . This discount would go a long way plus with a new young family who would really want such a major change. I think achieving his dream for the cup in Toronto has more value (tangible and sentimental) than the $$$ at this stage of the game, plus having the cup + point on the resume goes a long way
. For the Rust deal the LEAFS could do Kampf, Jamkrok and a pick +? .

Karlsson still has 2 more years so let’s say they pay Marner $13 million and Karlsson makes $10 million that’s 2 players making $23 million . The cap next year is $95.5 million so 2 players making 25% of the cap. Dubas needs Marner because the team has drafted poorly and late so the only way the team can win in overpay free agents.

Maybe to sign Bennett and Ekblad they have to trade Carter Verhaeghe who makes $7 million next season it’s a 8 year deal. I think Bennett is a stronger asset than Verhaeghe both have the same in points 2025 playoffs but Bennett brings more with his physical abilities. If Bennett can’t go around a player he will just hammer the player that stands in his way.

Interesting statement considering you seem to be the only person who feels the Penguins are in the running for Marner’s services.
I doubt very much that Marner wants to commit the next 7 years of his life to a franchise destined to become far worse before they begin the turnaround in their rebuild.
Crosby, Malkin, Letang and Karlsson are all aging.
Of the 4, only Crosby is aging well.
Does this look like the kind of future Marner would choose when he will have multiple teams to choose from?
I would imagine Marner will either choose a team that is close to competing for the Cup like Carolina Hurricane or LA Kings, or a young, upcoming team like San Jose, Anaheim, Chicago or even Utah who are loaded with talented youth and are only a catalyst away from breaking out as a contender.
I think Pittsburgh Penguins would be at the top of Marner’s “No Trade List”, if he had one!
