Not a fan of any of Treliving's timid moves.
Undersized Maccelli, Travis Boyd, Pezzeta, Grouix, Mermis??
Certainly nothing there that will impact Leafs winning next season.
I would have liked to see Jeanott in Blue and White but Boston gave him $3.4 x 5 years.
Would have been much better signing than acquiring Maccelli but awfully pricey for a 3rd/4th line player.
Rangers grabbed Taylor Raddysh for $1.5 x 3 years another player I liked for the bottom 6.
He would have fit well at RW on the 4th line.
Justin Brazeau was another 4th line RW I felt could have been a target for the Leafs, $1.5 x 2 years to the Penguins.
Scrolling down the list of signings, it strikes me how few players I would have wanted to see ending up with the Leafs.
Most of anything impactful was simply too expensive.
There was a lot of talk about all that could be done with the freed up $11 million from Marner's contract but nothing came of it and Leafs still only have a little over $5 million to play with.
Leafs are still in need of a 1st line RW and a 3rd line RW unless they plan on playing Jarnkrok in that position.
I see a 1st significant downturn in Leafs fortunes coming up in 2025 - 2026.
Too many passengers not enough drivers.

I actually like the timid play, gives Cowan a chance to grab the spot out of camp, not handing out term so he can make a play at next year's free agency when their are actually big fish possibly in play.
He could still be looking at making a move for one of the rfas still looking for a deal.

I think he I ly signed Marlies yesterday. I very much think Tre is in on Ehlers. Which is holding things up right now.

WB
At this point I agree with everything you stated. Whether it’s timidity or something else he’s short of a passing grade IMO. Your list confirms that.
Still time left before the season so much can happen.
Getting Roy for Marner was good but not a stroke of genius by any means.
I view Maccelli in a positive way, smallish but engaged in compete and is a very good puckhandler and distributor. Play him up the lineup and I think he will return to previous offensive output.
I’d also go further on the missed UFA list. He’s missed on at least a dozen players that could have helped!
I would take a flyer on Mantha, Kunin and Roslovic.

That jeannot deal is awful glad they didn’t sign it while I agree that i would of liked to add some bigger names I also liked that he never overpaid anyone marlies lost a few guys so I would think all the signings so far go there getting guys via trade is a better way of building a team and I think that what tre is trying to do keep in mind cap space is king come deadline day I think there will be another decent add as tre has said he’s looking to improve the top 6.
02 Jul 2025 12:44:51
Exactly, these were pretty much all Marlie signings yesterday with the exception of Miccelli.
Pezzetta may get spot duties on the Leafs as well.

Does it really matter until we see what the playoff roster looks like? I would like to have seen more as well, but it was a weak UFA pool and we would all have been mad if Tre gave out term and overpaid for mid to bottom 6 guys.
02 Jul 2025 16:24:32
Well yes RLF it does matter.
If today was next year’s trade deadline and the Leafs need a couple of pieces to make a run I do not think Pezetta, Boyd or Groulx will get you anything.

RSears. My point was - it is one day into free agency and 3 months from the start of the season. So getting all worked up because we missed out on a bunch of bottom 6ers seems overreactive. even what we start with, will not be what we end with.
Last years opening night roster had Marner, Holmberg, Liljegren, Dewar, Reaves, Timmins and Robertson on it who will all not be here this time.
They have been replaced so far this year by Laughton, Roy, Maccelli, Pezzetta and Carlo. Cowan and Quillan will get a look in camp likely. That is if Tre doesn't do anything at all before camp. The other thing we didn't have last year on opening night is $6M in cap space. Personally, I like what I see this year more than last seasons opening night as it is, despite Marner's departure.
You don't build your playoff team on July 1st.

The point of this thread is what Tre has or hasn’t done since season end. My evaluation based on his moves since the end of the season are as stated in my first post.
He’s not alone as a GM but he does not get a passing grade from me.
I agree a July1 roster is not a playoff roster; I didn’t say it was.
My point which you may have missed is that every move regardless of the time of year is important. To make an impactful acquisition at the trade deadline requires capital; give to get. Unfortunately our cupboard is sparse and Tre has done little to add strategic pieces.
Why sign Pezetta when Kostin is available? Just one example; there are others.
I also believe Tre mis-managed Marner’s contract and now here we are. I’m at least happy that he got something; Roy is as add that I like but it’s not a stroke of genius.
I also like Maccelli. Will the two of them make up for Marner’s loss? The jury is out but it’s not looking likely at this point.
Just to be clear, the Leafs have, in fact, missed out on a number of top 6 players for one reason or another.
And yes to your point, he has missed out on several bottom 6 players who are better than ours.
I don’t need to make a list; you’re more than capable.
02 Jul 2025 23:58:27
Actually, I can't honestly think of any top 6 forwards that were available via free agency that suited what the Leafs are looking for that would change the DNA.
If you have a number that you can point to that would have fit, I'm not sure who they were.
03 Jul 2025 05:32:42
You are correct that many top6 got resigned ahead of July1 so weren’t truly available, though GMs can talk to agents in advance of UFA window opening.
Marchand was still available as was Boeser, Granlund and still Ehlers.
As to DNA, I think Tre was simply referring to the Core4. Not everyone has to be Mathieu Olivier!
I don’t have much interest in Ehlers and apparently he wants to hide away in a hot and quiet location, perhaps the Fiji Islands would work for him. Don’t have to worry.
To add more names, I might have to stretch to Top9. Suter is now gone as are Mantha and Mangiapane. Maybe another that I can’t think of now. Roslovic is still available.
The others I had interest like Brazeau, Raddysh and Jeannot are L4 with a possibility for L3.
As I said earlier I’d take a flyer on Klim Kostin and let him fight Pezetta in training camp. Winner advances.
03 Jul 2025 13:24:14
Ehlers would be a great fit on the top line with Matthews and Knies. Only at the right price.
03 Jul 2025 13:52:42
Marchand resigned before July 1st. He wasn't available. Boeser ultimately resigned. Granlund is don't think fit the mold. Didn't seem like many options, if any, to me.
03 Jul 2025 15:53:32
Okay thought Marchand didn’t sign until Tuesday.
