Dallas sends Bichsel to the minors and sneaks under the cap. Toronto retains a bit of Jarnkrok to help if necessary. The pitch to Reilly to waive his NMC is that Dallas is competitive and a tax-free state.

Option 2 is to add to Option #1

Bastian just signed in Dallas. He could have come to the leafs for nothing.

Yes, Bastian signed a 1 yr league minimum contract as the Stars have no cap space. Jarnkrok would be an upgrade in skill but a downgrade in size and moving Bastian is both a cap management and roster space move as they would have 15 forwards without moving him. They could send Stranges down to the minors to manage the cap but he’s a 0.78 pt/ gm guy in the minors so they likely want to give him a shot.

But the msg Dallas gives by trading him away will prevent them from signing players in the future. People don't want to sign with 1 team to be instantly traded to a new team they probably didn't want to sign with. Its considered a no-no.
