Leafs trade Brown
Carolina trades Rask ($1M retained)

Carolina retains salary to balance the books. Rask not doing so hot after injury. If he returns to form, could be a good deal for Leafs. He could be 3C and we trade Kadri for a handsome return.

This trade hinges on two things you mentioned, Rask returning to form and being able to trade Kadri for return.

Second thing easier to do.

This trade does not address Leafs need for blueline help or toughness up front.

Yeah. At $3M a year, it’s a real gamble. I’d be willing to downgrade at 3C if we could trade Kadri as part of a package for a top line defenseman. I don’t know who we could get for Kadri + but I imagine it would be a fairly significant return. He’s a stellar player. More of a 2C than a 3C, he’s really stood out the last couple years. On another team he would be a real performer.

This is only one step in the process. After securing an adequate 3C, Kadri would next be traded for defense help. Rask is a poor choice. Who would you recommend?
