If Mo Rielly is our Duncan Keith, in my opinion we need a Brent Seabrook to play with him.

I'm curious to see what we can come up with to fill this need.

We have a coach who can maximise potential - so a partner that allows Babs to mould is a must have.

Put together a trade for the right side on the top defensive pair to play with 44.

Must be 1) +/ - 24 years old 2) shoot right 3) play physical.

Matt Dumba from the Wild!

Wild are in cap trouble, and need picks! Good trade partners for the Leafs!

Connor Carrick (who the Leafs already have) is someone to keep an eye on as well. Having a fantastic playoff run right now with the Marlies (leading all players in scoring I believe).

Lindholm would be a huge upgrade over Seabrook, Rielly might not be as good as keith though so it evens out.

Connor Carrick is only 5'10" and 195lbs compare to Seabrook who is 6'3" and 225lbs and mean as a pit bull. I will give Connor credit, he doesn't back down from anyone. He's just a different type/style of player than Seabrook. If Reilly is going to be in the top pair, you would prefer to have a tougher guy at #2 man.

Maybe Trouba but it doesn't seem likely. After that we're better off drafting wisely with the Pitt Pick all the way to the third round.

Trouba is the only guy that fits your criteria. Trouba is not as offensively gifted as Vatenan, Barrie, or Dumba but Vatenan and Barrie are on the smaller side (5'10") and I often question Dumba's skating and defensive ability. I still think JVR should be dangled to get one of these guys. But the answer may also be in the 2017 draft as Liljgren will go top 3 and Cal Foote probably top 10

Trouba or Charles Mcavory

7.) 22 May 2016 18:30:51
I agree with DL7. Trouba is the guy and JVR is probably the main piece if there's a deal to be made. He's on a great contract for two more years which also holds a lot of value but could be a problem for the Leafs when he becomes a UFA. As for the 2017 draft, If you're realistic about next seasons results in the standings for the Toronto just look at Buffalo.

They have some good young stars and some decent vets and made a big jump in the standings but they're still drafting in the top ten because to go from worst to first is a very hard thing to do. Signing Stamkos and Vesey and whoever else people are hoping the Leafs aquire still might not make them a playoff team right away. The draft rankings will change significantly between now and then but IMO it is a foregone conclusion Liljegren and Foote go top ten.

Both right handed D who play different styles but both have top pairing upside. It's definitely going to be an exciting offseason.

Top lines I'd like

Forwards
JVR Stamkos/Matthews Vessy

Defence
Reilly Byfuglin/Chara

Chara? Really? Why?

If you believe that trading roster players for picks is a good idea - I believe that Vancouver would be willing to trade the 5th OA pick for JvR - they are not rebuilding.

I would consider that a productive off season. I don't like the line combos as Kadri is a Number 2 given his progression last year and his contract. He'd probably regress as a number 3 center. I think Matthews is a winger this coming season if the Leafs sign Stamkos. Perhaps Nylander can play Center on the 3rd line, and 1st PP and still have the ability to develop.

Babcock also said at season's end that they would address team toughness. I think that we should expect a FA or trade to get a player with size and sandpaper into our top 9.

Gardiner is not a player the Oilers want. He has trouble defending, and has yet to play consistently. Both are very big holes in the Oilers play now.

The Oilers need a 26 year old(ish) defenseman who has playoff experience. Someone who can turn into a leader. Shattenkirk comes to mind - he's played with great leaders and would fill the Oilers need much better.

The only chance the Leafs have at this pick is to flip their late first rounder for someone the Oilers would take. Bozak, a prospect and the Pitts 1st rounder is a hard package to pass up for Shattenkirk. You could then make a play for the 4th. Lots of leg work though.

There are several reasons top 5 picks stay put. Teams picking early need young players; they also need to have cap space when they decide to become aggressive during free agency. Top 5 picks usually allow for 5 years of manageable salary - the Steven Stamkos situation is an example.

I believe if the Leafs, or any team, trades out of the top 5 it will be with a team with a top 10 pick who will have to add (probably last year's tip pick or something)

Here is an example I am hoping to see:

Arizona
Dylan Strome
2016 1st Round Pick

Leafs
2016 1st Overall pick

Let's build a local and Canadian core.
