Leafs send to Washington JVR
Washington sends back their 2016 1st round pick (26th overall) and their elite Goalie Prospect Samsonov.

Not enough for jvr

Samsonov has 2 years remaining on his contract in Russia so dealing him for JVR is not worth the risk of him staying

Samsonov we can wait for. But the low 1st and Ilya is not enough for JVR.
Replace the low 1st with Jacob Vrana. Looked pretty good with the Bears. Ready for the NHL.

I think it is a fair deal for both teams. Washington seems to have two years left to try to win, which is why they would be willing to give up one of their top three prospects and their first this year. JVR would be great alongside of Backstrom. Samsonov is the highest rated Goalie prospect in the last three drafts and the Leafs are not in win now mode so they can afford to let him stay and mature in Russia for two years. The 26th overall is not high but it would be a lot easier for the Leafs to move up from that spot than the 30th.

I would say switch the 1st round pick with Vrana the rw prospect and then do this

The Leafs have too many RW prospects as it is and it is unlikely that Washington will trade either Vrana or Bowey, not because they are better prospects than Samsonov, but because they may provide the final piece to a championship team. Washington may need Bowey to step up next season, while Vrana is necessary because Oshie and Williams have two years left on their deals so they need a future RW to replace them.
I think the deal is close to fair (though if I was being picky I would say if the pick was three spots higher it would be equal). My only problem with the deal is that I was hoping to use JVR to secure a top pairing right side d man with him. But at pick 26, the Leafs could use WAS 2nd to trade up if Fabbro falls to the 19th-21st range
