Well here is a deep thought.
If Knies was being shopped for Werneski why not shore up the D and dangle something Vancouver may bite at.
Ballzy but for me the our line up is better rounded out and with this trade it is almost a one stop shop.

Suffering - thoughts always provoke my mind for improvements now. I feel the D-core is improved and not only improved, but younger, signed contracts that are reasonable. Hronek 8 years at 7.25m.
Debrusk is in at year three for a 7 year contract @5.5
Pettersson needs a new contract next year.
More solid and rounded out. Yes we give up the #1 but our window seems better now with cap space to boot.

Wow, watch hockey much? I don't think so. Hronek is calm and plays big heavy minutes and is appreciated and noticed by coaches and adored by fellow players. He does a great job.

The current or upcoming first OA pick in almost any draft will land 2/3rds to 3/4 of what Van is giving up. In some cases more. On top of that Leafs are giving up Rielly, Tanev, a 1st and Danford. Heavily in Van's favour.

RLF if you believe Rielly and Tanev weigh on "Vancouver's favour" and not realize the two D men coming back plus the draft picks coming back along with Debrusk at a very reasonable cap hit well,... imo you gotta to give to get.
Vancouver now is dealing with Morgan and Tanev's cap hit as they are both on the downswing of things. It's a lot closer of a fair deal imo than you think, but better overall for the Leafs for the two year window.

That guy. It's not as much about Rielly and Tanev, it's that you also added a 1st and Danford. How about this - break down the trade value for me then. Of what the Leafs are giving up, what is for Hronek, what is for Petterson and what is for DeBrusk and how the 2nd and 4th Van is giving up balances things out.

I agree with RLF. We are giving up a 1st round pick next year, a first overall pick and a first round pick in Danford along with 2 roster players. Break it down in who is worth what as RLF suggested and you might recognize the disparity more.

Breakdown -
Looking at the two defenders that Vancouver is giving up compared to the 3 Leafs give up.
Hronek RD Shoots Right is 28 years old on year 3 of an 8 year contract @7.25 mil per year.
The guy is a workhorse minute muncher who is a dependale two way defender who is a RD and also plays on the #1 powerplay.
He finds the forwards with breakout passes, gets the puck to the net, capable of running powerplay and IMO more reliable than Morgan Rielly, who's passes aren't that great, shot isn't great and shy's away from hits on both ends of the ice,...Whereas,..Hronek is not shy to take a hit or dole them out or fight if needed.
To attain Hronek I feel a first round pick would be needed to attain him.
Morgan might get back a 4th with a prospect,...maybe?
Heavey pressure on Morgan this year and if he is just mediocre he will be booed more often than not bringing his value even lower.
Hronek would be a welcomed addition and help shore up our D and for me comparing the two is like night and day.
Youth is the truth and Hronek is 4 years younger.
So Hronek cost a first, a prospect for a cap aged "we've had enough of Rielly" therefore attatch Danford who also ties in a bit with trading Tanev too.
Tanev- Yup all heart but as we all know he probably won't be able to finish his career on ice with us during the longevity of his contract, nevermind a full season. ( that is finger crossing)
He is 36 has 3 more years signed at his hit of 4.5m.
Elias Pettersson LD/RD shoots left is only 22 years of age and is rounding out towards 100 games played (98)
He knows how to use his size, has good defensive awareness, closes gaps. He is a pretty decent shutdown defender for his age and plays on the 1st pk unit. He is a reliable smooth skater blocked 85 shots, threw 136 hits
I feel that him being young and able to play NHL duties right now kinda keeps the band aid from tearing with losing Danford in the trade.
In order to get Pettersson in a trade from the canucks considering you are sending back Tanev, an add has to be made on behalf of the Leafs.
Gavin- he is the one who needs to be in the trade in order to yank the two canuck defenders. Throwing in the 1st could be haggled between the two gms, and same with the 2nd and 4th coming back from Vancouver. I threw the 1st in there to also attain Debrusk for our line up and capture the 3 Vancouver targets I feel would help our club for the 2 year window plus longer.
we are freeing up some cap space, shoring up our d better, keeping Knies and Cowan.

In this trade scenario, I am trading for targets and having to pay a steep price. Giving up Mckenna is a hard almost crazy task, nevermind throwing the first round pick out the door too.
It is a matter of gaining two defenders that imo make the Leafs better overall knowing compared to what Tanev and Morgan can supply.
The new look is still very interchangeable and with the addition of Hronek, it can ease Rads new transition from most likely being our 1st pairing d man to possibly being a top 3 defender to play 2nd line duties. Also,...
Pettersson could move up to a 2nd line top 4 defender as well.
Lines can still be juggled, even going so far to say if we play Florida we could put Knies- Paul- Debrusk on as a 1st line against the Brady and Matt (add another rat line) let them take care of the dirty buisiness.
As mentioned maybe this offer is just an offer to gain traction (Most likely wouldn't happen) but for me it is a closer deal that would need to be made in order to trade for the Canucks two defenders I targeted plus Debrusk. (off to work boys back in 9 hours) cheers.

Thanks Thatguy. I was more looking for Hronek=, Petterson= and Debrusk= and the 2nd and 4th balance what parts of the trades.
From what you wrote - you said Hronek would require a 1st and prospect (Danford) for taking Rielly.
Then for Pettersson if the Canucks are taking Tanev, an add would be needed and then mention Gavin.
So is it
Hronek for Rielly, 1st and Danford
And
Pettersson, Debrusk, 2027 2nd and 4th for Tanev and McKenna
Is that correct?
