So here is how I think free agency should play out for the leafs. (Thinking as a dubasesque type free agency.) Toronto trades dermott, johnsson kerfoot, Andersen.

We come in under the cap. This is how I think dubas should move forward being dubas. I myself think move marner for high end prospects and high picks. Freeing up room to sign both brodie and tanev. But I also wouldve kept kapanen in that case.

Would have liked to keep Kapanen as well. But a decent prospect+ 15th overall I would take every day for a 3rd liner.

I’m not in agreement with some of the trades you have proposed but I am a big fan of trading Marner.
Marner to Ottawa for the #5, #28 and #33.
With the #5 pick Leafs could take Lucas Raymond (a Marner clone but a little more physical) to replace Marner and save $10 million a season for the next 3 year on his ELC.
That $10 million could then be used to improve the defense.

There is no chance in hell that you get a top 5 pick++ for Marner. He's a helluva player but Ottawa doesn't need him. In 3-5 years Ottawa could end up being a dynasty if they play there cards right. They don't need Marner as much as cheap ELC players to grow with the team.
I know everyone will say Marner is already half paid but, if your not trying to contend 3 years of ELC is still far and away better financially and logistically.

If we want full value for Marner, we probably have to be willing to eat about $1.5 or more of his contract. Great player a lot of teams would love to have, but at 10.9 per, I don't think we get good value on him. At 8.9-9.4, might get close to value, but that is still not likely a top 5 pick ++.
