Getzlaf Trade:

Only works if Getzlaf requests a trade to contender.
He is only owed 6M in salary this season. A signing bonus of 3M has already been paid prior to the season. This leaves 3M owing throughout the season. He has a 8,25M cap hit. This would require a trade similar to the Lehner trade last season.

Anaheim trades Getzlaf 50% (345K real money at deadline) retain to NYR.
Leafs send a 2nd and prospect to ANA and a 3th to NYR.
NYR send another 50% retained (173k)Getzlaf to TOR

Essentialy NYR buy a 3rd for $173k and ANA gets a 2nd and prospect for 50% retained Getzlaf.

Leafs get Getzlaf at very reduced cap hit ~2M. Perfect 3C for deep playoff run.

A player can only be retained up to 50% total.

No they can be retained twice up to 50%. Effectively 75%.
Happened to Matt Belesky.

This absolutely does not make sense. Cap hit is based on AAV. Really money does not factor into the equation in the slightest.

Lehner's trade had Dubas retaining. Not retaining real money. I'm going to say it's also not legal to retain just real money. If it was then Dubas calls every GM in the league and says "pay me a first and I'll pay half your best players salary".

If this also worked, then MNM-JT would only be worth a 900k cap hit if they were traded as most of the salary is in signing bonus. This clearly is not the case though.

AAV=average annual value. Value and real money aren't the same.

The three-way Robin Lehner deal includes complex salary retention: TOR retains 44% of the 50% retained by CHI, which amounts to a $1.1M cap charge and roughly $190,000 in salary owed.

Meaning Toronto retained 22% total and Chicago retained 28% total.

It was just a way for Chicago to not have to retain as much on actual salary.
