I have a creative 3 way trade similar to the trade that brought Ryan O'Reilly to The Leafs.

Chicago Trades Gust (AHL) to Washington for Mantha and The Capitals retain 50% of Mantha's expiring contract.

Toronto Trades a 1st Round Pick 2024 and their 2024 3rd Round Pick (NYI Pick) to The Capitals for Gust.

Chicago Trades Mantha with Chicago retaining another 50% of Mantha's expiring contact to The Leafs for NRobertson.

So in the end Washington trades Mantha retaining half his salary and getting a 1st Round Pick and a 3rd Round Pick in 2024 from Toronto.
Chicago gets NRobertson and retaining another 50% of Mantha's contract.
And Toronto gets Mantha and Gust.
With 2 retaining of 50% by both Washington and Chicago yes Toronto can fit Mantha into their cap.

Leafs give up a 1st round pick and Nick Robertson for an AHL player and a guy that Washington was desperately trying to trade at the last trade deadline and considered buying out this past summer.
Just because Mantha is having a bounce back season after multiple years of futility is no reason for the Leafs to take on the balance of the $5.7M dollar contract of a UFA who will be 30 years old at the start of next season and whom the Leafs won’t want to resign this summer.

Surely the value of the assets of Nick Robertson and a 1st round pick can bring the Leafs a RHD they so badly need over a LW they have little need of.

I don't understand why Gust is even involved. It's not like wants a 30 year old career AHLer.

Simply done, it would be Toronto trades a 1st and 3rd to Washington for Mantha 50% retained and then Toronto sends Chicago Robertson to retrain another 50% of Mantha's contract. I can't imagine the Leafs would do it, but there is no reason it has to be so complicated by adding Gust into it and all the previous trades.

I think the Caps would be happy with a 1st at 50% retained for Mantha. Then a 4th or something to someone else for another 50% retained.
