Ask Dallas a soon as their season ends for permission to talk to Jason Robertson and his agents interes to do due diligence on signing interest with Toronto. Teams do this often.
If allowed to, then try to swing the following.
To Dallas: Knies $7,750,000
Domi $3,750,000
To Toronto Tyler Seguin $9,850,000
Jason Robertson $14,000,000 Based on Matching $11.5 to $12 to stay in Dallas.
It would put at just over $12,000,000 difference in the swap which still leaves them $12,000,000 to fill some roster holes with Marlies and some reasonable UFA's
Dallas is in a Salary Cap Bind so this might be one they would consider. Yes I know Seguin is coming off major knee surgery, so ...if he is fine he can still be a good 3rd line Contributor, if he is not then he he goes on LTIR and more Salary Cap is freed up.
Yes he needs to waive but he also knows his career is coming to a end soon. The Leafs would only have his contract for one year before he becomes a UFA. If they offer sheeted Nick Robertson and kept him it might be a incentive for Jason to want to play with his brother for a couple of years.
Then we try to package Reilly somewhere to free up more cap and try for one more UFA... Tuch is a reach but man oh man if we could somehow add Tuch and Robertson and still have Nylander and Matthews as well as Tavares and Cowan. And if Seguin was healthy as well you have not a bad looking start for your forward lines.
Just a thought for a Retool, and if it doesn't work then for sure one of Matthews or Nylander would have to be dealt.

Seguin at 10m is brutal.

It is a trade off for one year if he comes back healthy and we might actually get some production but we eat it as the cost of doing business to get Robertson. Then we let him go. After next year. If he can't play at all then he is on LTIR. The deal long term is Knies and Domi for Robertson.

@ Ckps1976 I am open to any suggestions you have on how to get Robertson from Dallas before he is an RFA. With trades you sometimes have to get creative.

I'm really not a fan of Robertson and don't think he helps this team at all. I may be a bit skewed in that belief though.
Would prefer to keep Knies.

I wouldn’t trade Knies alone for Robertson.

@LL I’m with you! I’m good with keep our unicorn Matty Knies. Don’t want Robertson! He’s ok but not a guy I’ll build my team around. Knies on the other hand that’s where we start our rebuild/tool around. IMO.

I know Knies has that untapped potential. But something didn't sit right with me this year, with the "I don't think the injury will get worse playing through it." It was always him saying it and the coaches saying that he wanted to play through it.
Then he comes out with this statement
"It's one of those that the more you play, the more wear & tear on it, it's not going to get better .." Well here is a idea..... Don't play as much take some games off and allow someone with fresh legs to get out there.
What ticked me off was his lack of speed dropping especially on the backcheck leading to that god awful plus minus rating. So yeah he played through it but maybe sitting out more games to rest it might have allowed a healthy Groulx or.... a healthy Easton Cowan in the lineup instead of spending a friggen month in the press box. Then if Knies had that rest of playing maybe 2 out of 3 games he would have had more jump and the other players spelling him would as well.
It leads to another discussion about the Next G. M. As G. M you need to be blunt with your coaches, your players and your team doctors and trainers. If a player is dictating when and where he is in the lineup with health. And he is hurting the team with his performance on the ice. He needs to be sat down, no if's and's or but's. If they are not on the same page as the G. M then those people need to find different teams to work, play and coach for.
I know there are a ton of Knies lovers on here but the fact he could not perform as well on getting back up the ice defensively cost us goals and for sure wins. I am not a hater of his. I would be all over other players that played hurt for a long extended period and cost the team as well.
