****trade idea**** Toronto would be sending out William Nylander in exchange for Zach Hyman, Isaac Howard, and Matthew Savoie. *****

In the short term (1-2y), this would likely be a loss for Toronto. Nylander is a proven elite winger and one of their most dangerous offensive players, so moving him would hurt their top-end scoring.
However, the return is focused on long-term upside. Savoie has potential to develop into a solid 2C (maby 1C), and Howard could grow into a top-six winger, which would help Toronto’s depth and future core. On top of that, getting Hyman back adds a familiar, reliable middle-six winger who already knows the organization.

Everybody like Hyman.

Cap-wise, Toronto would also free up some flexibility, which could be used to strengthen the bottom six or add help on defense.

Overall, Toronto would be betting on future depth and development over immediate star power. It’s a high-risk, high-reward move: they lose an elite player in Nylander, but gain multiple pieces who could grow into important roster players down the line.

Big question is whether the upside of Savoie and Howard is enough to justify moving a player of Nylander’s caliber. And whether Edmonton would need to add more assets (like a pick) to balance the value?

Tor Nyr talking seriously right now. Kicking tires or?

I think Knies is filling a Hyman roll and has a higher ceiling not to mention trade Nylander would be a huge mistake.

Right now I think Edmonton is looking at how they will shed salary not bring more in. Without adding any extra. They have 8 roster spots to fill with only $16.5 to work with. By bringing in Nylander and shipping Hyman and Savoie out that brings it down to to roughly $11.5 to work with but now also a extra spot to fill so 9 roster spots to fill.

Plus I am not to fond of Hyman turning 34 in a month.

@Leafs GM, I couldn’t disagree with you more. Teams don’t win cups when your players play like Nylander and only care about one side of the puck. He is selfish, he don’t give two F’s whether they win or lose, gives up on plays consistently, barely back checks, no battle in the corners.

Yes he scores a nice goal once in a while but you can’t win anything important if your star players are self centered, lazy and uncoachable. Nylander and Mo need to go asap.

Oh my mistake so you don’t win cups with 40 goal scorers and elite talent. The game must changed since I last saw it.

You win with a combination of a few Elite players surrounded by a group of well balanced very good players. This team is nowhere near that. We don’t have e the assets to do a proper retool, but we do have the assets with a smart GM to do a good 3 year rebuild. That involves parting with those assets. You tend to not want to part with anyone.

That’s admirable you are loyal to the players, but…. those players best trade value us now. If we wait another year we might not even have valuable enough assets to even to a good rebuild. We can’t count on the draft. There are 2 draws that could have that disappear. Hopefully not, but we shall see.

Who said we need to rebuild? I don’t think we do. We need to invest in some real defensive talent which we never have in the current era. How does giving away elite talent help us win the cup? All of these trade proposals that involve offensive players being exchanged makes no sense to me when your issue is keeping the puck out of our net.

We tried this experiment with Marner booted him out for no reason created cap space for non existent players available and how did that work out… so why repeat that again and for whom do you trade for that’s this magical savour.

@LeafsGM78 You want to keep the talent from our current team as you said earlier in this post ". I think Knies is filling a Hyman roll and has a higher ceiling" but you also suggested trading him a little while ago.

So give us a bit of an idea of what your roster for next year will look like and how you will accomplish setting that roster?

I didn’t suggest it. I read an article and was commenting on trading Knies. My roster strategy: keep the star players, sign Raddysh to whatever; if we can’t move Mo, demote him, try to sign a 2c or reluctantly trade Stolarz to achieve that and play the kids. Like you said, you need a few elite players, which we have, and a balance of good players around them which we never had, and that’s what I want to see before we blow it up.

Ten years of playoffs is pretty good, but early exits due to the lack of balance you spoke of on defence and average goaltending. So why not upgrade the defence finally and see what happens instead of making mistakes on maybe players.

I’m not trying to fight with you, so I’ll ask you the same question: what are you trying to build? Is it get younger, is it salary dumping, is it DNA, which is a bs term in my opinion. All the trades here involving Matthews and Nylander are swapping out established elite players for younger unseasoned players in positions that aren’t a concern for the Leafs. This Leafs team has never had the balance you spoke of: always top-heavy, core four, average defence with average goaltending. We let Marner walk with the intent of having more cap.

We had a GM who brought in bottom-six forwards, no defenders, traded the future, and a coach asking our best players to play a style they’ve never had to before. I’d like to see the current roster up front with a balanced, improved back end, because, at the end of the day, we were close. We lost to the eventual Cup champs a few times and conference finalists a few times over the ten-year run; that doesn’t spell failure to me. This year was mostly a management-created implosion, with injuries sprinkled in there, not a reason to blow it all up.

Not trying to fight either but a lot of the trades not just myself but by other people who have thought it through are based on multiple factors. A need to always keep stocking draft picks, a need to find young players that are faster and have a good future in the league. Sometimes Salary cap is a factor but not just for the current year but being smart on the UFA signings and future negotiations because some of the younger player in a year or 2 will need those contrct upgrades. So it is wise not to go to the full wall with your current salary cap because then you have players to dump the following couple of years if you max it to much. The time to max it is when you truly are 2 trades away at the deadline of going for the Cup.

Your suggestion of signing Raddysh to whatever is in my view a irresponsible approach. You can't give a player earning the minimum a outlandish contract based on one year. Especially when that year is because he is playing with a absolute elite defense partner in Moser.

Where as well are you going to find a #2 centre in a trade for Stolarz? Also where in the world did you get this idea the Leafs let Marner go for Salary Cap? That was not at all the reason he left. The team bungled that situation and it had nothing to do with Salary Cap.

You mentioned as well that myself and other poster trade suggestions are for younger players for positions that aren't a concern for the Leafs. What are those positions? Because right now I see us with one Centre in Matthews, another aging Centre in Tavares, One leginmate right winger in Nylander, one legitimate left winger in Knies and We will see where Cowan slots in at either left or right wing. We have 3 goalies and one has to go via trade or we probably lose one to waivers. By the way your suggestion of demoting Reilly can't be done. I could go on further but this should be enough to think about.

13.) 03 May 2026
03 May 2026 01:10:34
2c and 2 fist pairing defence men are I’m my thoughts are the biggest needs for this team and I don’t understand why putting Mo as a second or even third pairing is impossible.

14.) 03 May 2026
03 May 2026 01:20:29
Ok, but again who are we getting back in return that’s is 100 percent better for this team? Trade Matthews and Nylander, sure, but for what. So far it’s been two or three kids from the Ducks who have had a good year, show promise, but are nowhere as good as Matthews or Nylander at there age. So why assume they’ll be better. Look, you guys want them out here

Tor Matthews and Nylander and Mo

Edm McDavid nurse and a 1st

Tor retain whatever

Or
Matthews Nylander and a 1st

Col Mackinin Makar
Tor retains whatever

Those trades actually make us better, not maybe not, could be 100 percent better.

We only have one shot at getting this right and trading these guys for hypotheticals is irresponsible. Period. Not posting again about these two players.

15.) 03 May 2026
03 May 2026 03:08:58
So assuming we keep Nylander off of Matthews and Knies line, you don't think we need a right winger for that first line? Now for the 2c and the two top pairing d-men. What is your plan to obtain them?

16.) 03 May 2026
03 May 2026 04:31:05
JT or Robertson.

Sign Raddysh and OEL.

Fill OEL with one of the kids.

If we manage to dump Mo, use the cap space to fill out bottom pairing; dump Benny and Myers.
As for the 2c, I would have Cowen eat, sleep, breath, live with JT for the rest of the summer and groom him for the job.

Or there are options in free agency, admittedly not the best.
But at least we haven't completely given up the farm. Also have a goalie to use in a package to acquire someone to fill that spot.

17.) 03 May 2026
03 May 2026 10:59:13
I forgot about Tuck. Sign him as well.

18.) 03 May 2026
03 May 2026 11:33:40
And shoot for Peterson that’d be my first 2c choice.

19.) 03 May 2026
03 May 2026 12:12:44
Very confusing post. First line is sign Raddysh and OEL. OEL is under contract for 2 more years at a reasonable rate. Then you are replacing him with one of the kids. So does that mean you are trading OEL who is arguably our best (one of the top 2 d-men) and replacing him with one of the kids as one of the top d/men). If so, who are you trading OEL to and for who in return?

Now your plan to turn JT into a right winger on Matthew’s line creates an issue. Now we also need a #2 and a #3 centre. Ok, you said to make Cowan the #2 centre but that leaves us with no #2 left winger nor a #3 centre.

As for packaging one of the goalies in a package. Who on the roster would you package and for who? Your posts never seem to give those type of details that others do. You need to give a better plan than signing Tuch and Raddysh. There is no guarantee we get either. So then what?

I get the feeling sometimes you would rather bring back the same roster we finished with.

It is not an easy task is it? Sometimes that is why these large trades are made. To target
Players and pieces that change your franchise for the present and the future.

20.) 03 May 2026
03 May 2026 12:38:15
Sorry, first coffee was brewing when I wrote this.
Matthews Nylander Knies JT Petterson Tuck
Top six.
Raddysh OEL Carlo Tanev

Top four.

21.) 03 May 2026
03 May 2026 12:44:58
I get it, but this post has maybes and what if with it, but again every single post about trading Matthews and or Nylander has the same flaw they are both top 20 players in the league so unless you are getting back top 20 players I don’t see the need without having an underlying reason like Matthews is too beat up or Nylander has an attitude problem or cap reasons.

I just don’t get why trade elite talent seasoned players for young could be players.

22.) 03 May 2026
03 May 2026 12:57:19
So OEL is not being replaced by one of the young guys? And what are we trading to get Petterson. All I am asking is details of how you are doing all this.

23.) 03 May 2026
03 May 2026 13:02:11
Mo Robertson and a pick or prospect.
