Looks like the Zaitsev will be a leaf next season. Leafs should probably trade Hunwick at the deadline while his value is higher than ever.

Why would the Leafs retain on Grabner when they only have one salary retention left? And they will not trade Hunwick as Babs loves the guy.

Retaining salary is crucial to make some trades possible and to increase a players value. Hunwick is good, but whos to say next year he goes back to being a #6/7 D. Leafs want futures, Dallas wants a cup. Do you understand?

Itd be easy to retain on Grabner because him being in the final year its only until July 1st. Unlike other retentions like Kessel and gunnarsson that had multiple years left on their contract. And if they can get anything for Hunwick they will. Hunwick has one more year left on his contract so maybe they wait until next years trade deadline.

But it would also be easier to trade Grabner since he is a UFA. Teams can make smaller moves to accompany his salary cap, and then let him walk at the end of the year or re-sign him to a more sensible contract.

The only issue is that Dallas wants a top 3 D-man, so Phaneuf is who they are targeting. They should go all in this year and next with the roster they have.
