Assuming the Leafs land the first overall pick this year.

Do they trade that pick (aka Matthews), and acquire another top five pick + prospect?

For example,

TOR trades: 1st overall pick
CBJ trades: Top 5 pick + Sonny Milano

or

TOR trades: 1st overall pick
CAL trades: Top 5 pick + Bennett

What do you guys think?

This is an awful trade for San Jose

This is stupid. Why play a generational centre in Matthews on the wing?

But it would also be easier to trade Grabner since he is a UFA. Teams can make smaller moves to accompany his salary cap, and then let him walk at the end of the year or re-sign him to a more sensible contract.

Leafs cannot retain salary on any player. They may only retain salary on two players, and as of now, they have retained salary on Kessel and Gunnarsson. At the end of the season, Gunnarsson's contract will be up and only then can they retain salary on another player. I also don't think they would trade a young defence man in Honka for an older one. So realistically, only Ritchie would be an option.
