Honestly I would rather have Dermott over Subban at this point. Subban is definitely on a decline and even at 4.5 mill he would still be a bit overpaid. He is also far from the defenceman the leafs need right now as he is mostly offence.

Honestly even Nylander straight up for Dumba and Greenway I wouldn’t do. Dumba had a very bad year for his standards and Greenway just seems like an average 3rd liner. I just don’t him making up the difference in value that’s all.

Third trade is an overpayment imo. Bennet has a decent playoff but his regular season was terrible. Honestly it’s hard for me to call him a 3C. He is more of an above average 4th liner.

The last trade is just terrible. Allen fetched a 3rd so he isn’t worth much more then that obviously. It probably just takes Domi alone to get rid of Alzner. Terrible trade for the leafs.

I see what your saying on the surface but here is more context to support the deals:

Subban is that big shot from the point on the power play that has been missing for years. Dermott is not ever going to be a Norris candidate and PK has been. while I agree he is likely on the back end of his career 2 years at 4.5 for him is a major improvement. as that is what we’re per paying Ceci!

The Dumba trade is sweetened due to MIN retaining 1.2M of Dumba for 3 years. Maybe we don’t need to add a pick but I’m sure there are a bunch of offers for the wild on Dumba so they need to overpay somewhat.

Bennett had a breakout playoff and has been playing in the shadows of Tkachuk, Monahan and Johnny Hockey. He has the ability to move up and down the lineup and is only 24 years old, controllable and 1M less than Kerfoot On the cap. Freddy has value, but as per the Allen return, a 2nd and a 3rd for Freddy is a bit of an underpay but getting rid of his cap space and getting prospect capital and a young center is worth it.

The MTL deal is bit of an overpay but had to be since it’s TOR - MTL. Allen is a solid option at a low cap hit and Domi is a high skill physical player which are in short supply around the league. Would you trade Kapenan for Domi = all day. Alzner is the sweetener as it’s a cap hit the Leafs could use for depth and the draft and also work with MTL to possibly even retain a %.

Remember Leafs overvalue their players. but while all of these players have value, so do the ones returning. At these prices they would still be valuable in trades should Dubas need to flush some of them next summer.

Reality is that they aren’t going to be able to sign Petroangelo at 7+ and the other options of Brodie, Hamonic, will still cost more than $5 a year and the likes of Shultz, Greene will be useless bandaids.

They need stability and high end skill on the back end to complement the high end skill upfront. then the 2 bottom lines are where some older leaders teach younger players to play with grit and get them ready to move up the lineup.

I don't think a big shot is missing lol. Barrie has a good point shot. All it lead to was a bunch of blocked shots and breakaways. No one likes to play net front. A team like CBJ uses that form of strategy on the PP because they just crash and bang down low. With Marner and Nylander skating circles on the perimeter it doesn't help having Subban shoot the puck.

Wow. not missing a big shot is the only reason the point men get crowded so much. everyone knows that if they get the puck low it’s tougher and they aren’t scared of anyone who shoots from the point.

Leafs need a different option on the PP. getting rid of Willy and getting Greenway, Hoffman and Bennett will give the first and second unit new options.

PS, check your facts - Barrie didn’t have a bomb anything like PK, they got him as a PP quarterback, but it’s not a powerplay that is run from the point. it’s run off the half wall. they don’t need a PP quarter back with the likes of Tavares, Marner, Matthews, Thornton. they need options. one is a relief valve up top to blast it when those guys down low are boxed out. Similar to what Washington and Tampa do.
That option Ok PK will free up Matthews and all the other wingers.
