Because Trotz said he may do a little rebuild if they do not start to pick it up soon. Swing for the fence a bit.

Nash
Kampf $2.4M
Robertson $.785M
Minten ELC
2026 1st

Tor
O'Reilly (50% retained) $2.25M
L'Hereaux $.863M

Nash has the cap space to do this and get a serviceable bottom 6er, two young prospects and a 1st to start their little rebuild.

Toronto ends up with Matthews, JT and O'Reilly as their top 3 C's and add a young, physical bottom 6er who has put up points in the minors and should fit well with Leafs new style of play.

O’Reilly has already been here and stated he didn’t want to stay.

I agree with Clarky that he has no desire to play here again. I think O'Reilly is where he wants to end his career.
But, with that being said, O'Reilly does not have a NMC or NTC. So if Trotz gets the right offer, O'Reilly can be traded.

Clarky. I am well aware that O'Reilly chose Nashville over Toronto. He didn't say he didn't like it in Toronto. He said the focus on the team can be overwhelming at times from media and fans and he chose Nashville mostly because they gave him a better opportunity (to be a 1st line centre) as well as more money. He also said it was amazing to put on that jersey and play for the Leafs.

My thought is, if Nashville is going into rebuild, he may prefer to play somewhere that has a chance to win at his age. Speaking of the apst, let's remember that he won a Cup with Berube as a coach and likes that style of play. Even if there is a lot of media and fan focus in Toronto, Leafs are a different team now, playing a different style, with a coach he apparently really liked and a chance at another Cup.

Clarky. Just to clarify, not saying you are wrong, just explaining my thinking on why he might be ok with coming back to T. O.
