Man I love me some Seth Jones. Only issue is contract length. I guess it's an all in kind of deal though. It really should get done as a one for one though.

The problem is Columbus doesn't have a top pairing guy or elite prospect they could throw into Seth Jones spot. After this trade they would also have limited cap to sign someone to replace him as well.

He doesn't have long left on his deal though. I have a hard time giving up a pick as well. At one for one I would gladly do this. With the though it's tough.

He’s not cheaper for much longer. His contract is up end of next year. He’s probably going to be getting $8M+. Given that Brodie for $6M and Jones is well established as the better player, I got to think Jones will common top dollar as one of the best defensemen on the market. This deal would make me feel a lot more comfortable if we could have an extension in place. But we can’t even talk extension until next off season.

It is also worth noting that bringing in Jones at the cost of Marner would put a time limit on how long Rielly would be on the team. As their contracts expire at the same time, I don’t think Leafs can afford to re-sign them both. As a Leafs fan, I’m not prepared to sacrifice both Rielly and Marner for Jones.
